The gang tries to comfort Marshall after Lily left him for an art fellowship in San Francisco.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Alliterative Title: Where Were We?
  • Artistic Licence – Gun Safety: Robin almost points a Gun at Marshall, although this is Ted narrating what happened while he was not there, and she mentions growing up with guns (and survived that, so gun safety).
  • Drowning My Sorrows: How Marshall copes with the breakup.
  • I Just Shot Marvin in the Face: Robin tries to cheer Marshall up by taking him to the shooting range. When Marshall asks Robin how Ted will react to knowing that she's a Gun Nut, Robin shouts out, "That's why Ted won't know about this!" while still holding the gun. The reaction on Marshall's face is priceless.
  • Imagine Spot: Marshall concocts a crazy fantasy about Lily dating George Clinton, taking tennis lessons, and buying a ferret from the random list of charges on her credit card bill.
  • Insistent Terminology: Robin is not a Gun Nut, she's a gun enthusiast.
  • Law of Inverse Recoil: Robin's hand cannon knocks Marshall out when he tries to fire it at a gun range
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Ted's daughter complains that it feels like he's been talking for a year.
  • Lethal Chef: Marshall's pancakes are terrible according to Future!Ted.
  • Male Gaze: Robin provided a number of Fanservice this episode.
  • No Sense of Personal Space: Marshall barged in the shower while Ted and Robin are in a Shower of Love.
  • Oh, Crap!: Both delivered in a humourous sense:
Ted: [sensing Marshall calling Lily] Oh no.
    Robin: Already?
    ...
Barney: [at the strip club, sensing Marshall gone] Oh no.
    Stripper: Already?
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Ted gave Marshall a harsh wake-up call statement to snap him out of his funk.
  • Rule of Three: Barney mimes committing suicide three times, when Ted and Robin are being sickeningly sweet, then when Marshall cries over Lily, and a third time when Robin and Ted are at it again.
  • Seppuku: Barney briefly imitates seppuku during his "fake suicide" montage.
  • Sherlock Scan: Barney is able to figure out that Ted and Robin are now together by just observing.
  • Sickening Sweethearts: Ted and Robin start acting like this towards Barney who is very disgusted by them as a couple. Ted even weaponizes this to blackmail Barney into watching over Marshall.
  • Speed Sex: Robin thinks this is what happened to Ted while they were hooking up and he sensed Marshall calling Lily. Barney's stripper thinks he came in his pants when he sees that Marshall is gone.
    Barney: Uh oh.
    Stripper: Already?
  • Time Skip: The entire episode runs for three months.
  • Tough Love: Robin encourages Ted that Marshall needs this. After 56 days of dealing with his funk, Ted finally snaps and calls him pathetic, stunning everyone in the room. He realizes afterwards that he went too far, and Robin agrees.
"Because you're pathetic! I'm sorry, but right now you are not Marshall. You are the miserable, whining, shampoo-sniffing ghost of Marshall - and frankly, a guy like you doesn't have a shot in hell with a girl like Lily!"
