Recap / House S 5 E 15 Unfaithful

Go To

Directed by: Greg Yaitanes

Written by: David Hoselton

Daniel (Jimmi Simpson) is a disillusioned priest who hallucinates about seeing Jesus.

Dr. Cuddy invites Dr. House to her baby's naming ceremony. House cynically says it's an ancient Jewish tradition dating back to the 1960s and refuses to go.

House takes Daniel's case, despite everyone assuming the diagnosis is simple. House gives Dr. Foreman and Dr. Hadley an ultimatum: split or quit. The deadline is the resolution of Daniel's case. They refuse, so House fires Foreman and takes his badge.

The patient has moved around a lot. He was accused of molesting a boy, so he was transferred to another parish. Each time his new parish found out why he was transferred, he was moved again. He insists on his innocence: Dr. Kutner gives him the benefit of the doubt, Dr. Taub doesn't. Daniel reveals that the years of being treated like a monster has caused him to lose faith, both in the church and in God. House takes open delight in Daniel's rejection of religion.

The patient's toe falls off, dead and blackened. House talks it over with Kutner and Taub, who are confused about Foreman and Hadley's absence. House says he fired them.

While talking to Wilson, House becomes convinced that the only reason Cuddy invited him was a display of reverse psychology to make sure he didn't show up, and decides to go to the ceremony. Cuddy confronts Wilson, telling him to fix it, suggesting that House was right in his assessment.

Foreman goes to Cuddy, who thinks he's there to ask her to override House's decision. He just wants a letter of recommendation. Cuddy refuses to give him even that, saying that House should have fired him for meddling with the clinical trial.

The team determines that Daniel's disease is caused by an immunodeficiency, and conclude that he likely has HIV. Daniel insists that's impossible and refuses to be tested. Taub takes his refusal as confirmation and tracks down Ryan (Jake Thomas), the young man Daniel allegedly molested, to warn him to get tested.

Hadley tries to quit so that Foreman can get his job back. They end up getting in an argument over which one of them should leave the team, and Hadley storms off. House tells him that he can pick between going after her, or taking his job back. Foreman chooses the job.

Ryan shows up at the hospital and apologizes to Daniel, suggesting that the allegations were, in fact, false all along. Daniel appears to forgive him.

House ultimately realizes that, if he ignores the hallucination, then all the other symptoms point to a genetic disorder. Tests confirm that's what Daniel has, and treatment is started. House concludes that the hallucination was brought on by alcohol, and all the other symptoms by his genes. Daniel finds it unbelievable that this could be a coincidence. He points out that the hallucination made him go to the hospital, which saved his life once the other symptoms started, and allowed him to reconcile with the person who'd ruined his life. He seems to at least consider the possibility that God was behind it after all. House rejects that explanation, but gives up on arguing it.

House doesn't show up to the baby naming ceremony, instead he's alone at home playing Jewish melodies on the piano.

It's revealed in the closing moments that Hadley and Foreman are still together, having apparently faked their breakup so they could both stay on the team.

This episode contains examples of the following tropes:

  • "Eureka!" Moment: Talking about Dr. Cuddy's supposed religious hypocrisy, Dr. Wilson says, "Even if an absolute truth exists, we can't know all of it." This leads Dr. House to cross hallucinations off the board and realize Daniel has Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome, not AIDS.
  • Pedophile Priest: Daniel is suspected to be a child molester, which cost him his reputation. It's eventually implied that this was a false accusation.
