Sniper Part 1

Directed By: Jean de Segonzac
Teleplay By: Jean Gennis and Phyllis Murphy

A sniper starts terrorizing Baltimore.

This episode contains examples of:

  • As Himself: Jay Leno appears at the Waterfront. Bayliss and Munch act nonchalant even though they're secretly excited about him being there. This apparently is a Creator In-Joke about how Baltimore residents treated the cast members of the show.
  • Cold Sniper: Played with when it comes to Mariner - he's cold and precise when it comes to the people he shoots, but when Bayliss speaks to him through the door, he's clearly mentally unhinged as he insists he has to finish the game.
  • Idiot Ball: No one in the Homicide Unit is able to guess how "Eromitlab" is "Baltimore" spelled backwards?
  • Jurisdiction Friction: Bayliss and Jasper argue about how to handle Mariner once they've confronted him at his house.
  • Room Full of Crazy: The walls of Mariner's study are covered with hangman games.
  • Two-Part Episode
  • Wham Shot: The shot of a second sniper taking aim on the roof.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Barnfather gives one to Russert when he finds out she let Bayliss handle the hostage negotiation. As a result, he demotes her from captain to lieutenant, and then all the way down to detective when she protests.
