Story By: Tom Fontana, Julie Martin
Teleplay By: David Rupel

Russert finds out Doug Jones (Robert Clohessy), her friend, former partner, and new member of her squad, has been hitting his wife. In the fallout from Congressman Wade's fake kidnapping story, State's Attorney Maggie Conroy prosecutes Wade, and Pembleton ultimately decides to swallow his pride and take the blame for what happened. After several false starts, the Waterfront Bar finally opens for business.

This episode contains examples of:

  • 10-Minute Retirement: Pembleton goes through this, but eventually decides to come back to Homicide.
  • Awesome Anachronistic Apparel: Lewis, Bayliss and Munch have a photograph up behind the bar at the Waterfront of themselves dressed in nineteenth-century-style police uniforms with enormous false moustaches.
  • Domestic Abuse: Doug Jones has been physically abusing his wife.
  • Drives Like Crazy: This is the episode that establishes Lewis as possibly the worst driver on network TV, given the fact he nearly crashes the car into a police van that's on a crime scene and ends up hurting Bayliss.
    Scheiner: LEWIS!
  • Everyone Has Standards: When Bayliss chews out Maria Delgado for pursuing sensationalism in her stories about Congressman Wade and Pembleton, Delgado points out she also knows Congressman Wade is a Closet Gay but is not putting that in the story because she doesn't think it's anybody's business.
  • Foreshadowing: During Pembleton's 10-Minute Retirement, Bayliss asks, among other things, if he's going to teach criminal justice at some school. When we get to the movie, we see Pembleton is doing just that.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Jones gets shot by his wife after hitting her one too many times.
  • Lethal Chef: Pembleton turns out to be this, as when he's cooking for his wife, he burns a chicken and then a roast.
  • Shout-Out: When no one shows up at the Waterfront at first, Munch guesses people are watching The X-Files.
