Bumbling Dad: Jack's father, Arnie Mason, didn't graduated high school and never amounted to anything. He also has little interested in helping his son do better at school.
Clingy Jealous Girl: Jack's girlfriend, Arlene, is very possessive of him and gets jealous when "Fat Jenny" becomes his tutor.
Hands-Off Parenting: Jack's father does nothing to get his son to take his school work seriously. Heck, he encourages him to drop out and get a job since he himself is a former dropout. Thankfully, Jack's mother isn't the same.
I Just Want to Have Friends: Jenny is a very lonely, obese girl who only wants to feel accepted and have a real friend.
Jerk Jock: Jack Mason is a typical underachieving jock who cares more about sports than his schoolwork. Thankfully, he gets better thanks to Jenny and Johnathan's help.
Women Are Wiser: Jack's mother, Ellen Mason, originally did little to curb her son and husband's attitude, but after Jack dropped out for real, she finally had it. She threatened to kick Jack out and leave until he went back to school to get his diploma. She also points out to her husband that despite having had a steady job for 20 years, he hasn't had any promotions in that time and that he is setting a terrible example for their son.
