Recap / Hercules The Animated Series S 2 E 2 Hercules And The Visit From Zeus

Go To

After Herc visits to vent about his problems with Adonis, Zeus decides to turn himself into a mortal for a while to console his son and to prove he can deal with everyday problems. Unfortunately, Zeus cannot transform back before the time limit, and Hades takes advantage of this in an attempt to destroy his brother once and for all.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • An Aesop: Lampshaded by the Muses: "It’s hard as Hades, honey, when you can’t use the power of Zeus."
  • Big Friendly Dog: Cerberus acts like a puppy; a giant, three-headed puppy, but still a puppy, so all he wants to do is play fetch, run, do tricks, and slobber over others. Even Hades begrudgingly admits it's kind of cute.
  • Bond Villain Stupidity: Hades doesn't score a kill shot on Zeus before he transforms back partially because he wastes too much time after getting his depowered rival at his mercy.
  • Celestial Deadline: After encountering Adonis and realizing that his son had a point about the difficulty of dealing with him, Zeus tries to change back to normal. Unfortunately, it turns out he can't, though luckily he's only stuck as a human for a certain amount of time. However, Hades finds out about it, and Hercules and Zeus spend the last part of the "day as a human" trying to avoid his assassination attempts.
  • Ironic Echo Cut: When Zeus transforms back just as Hades tries to blast him, Hades angrily insinuates that things could have gone better for him if someone mentioned a time limit. The scene then cuts to the Fates watching the scene from their eye at Hades’ palace in the underworld, where Clotho asks the others if they mentioned the time limit, but Lachesis reassures her sister that Hades will figure it out.
  • Make Way for the Princess: A gender-flipped version occurs at the end of the episode. Just after Herc has told his father that he's no longer asking for him to do something about Adonis, Adonis snobbishly orders everyone out of the way for an entrance. This causes Zeus to hit him with a lightning bolt.
  • More Hero than Thou: Hercules and Zach/Zeus spend some time arguing over whether Herc should step in front or stand back and let Zeus and Hades settle things themselves. Hades clucks about causing an argument in the family and says he can solve the problem by just frying both of them at once.
  • Morphic Resonance: Even after transforming into a human teenager, Zeus keeps his signature hairstyle.
  • Music Soothes the Savage Beast: Seeing that Cerberus is tiring while chasing them, Zack suggests they could encourage him to nap and starts singing a lullaby, which does the trick.
  • Opinion Flip Flop: Hercules tells Zeus that he'll find some way to deal with Adonis's bullying himself. Zeus praises his son for his maturity...and immediately changes his mind when Adonis enters the area and opens his mouth.
  • Parental Love Song: Zach (Zeus in disguise) begins singing a lullaby to calm down the puppy Cerberus. When the two have successfully gotten him to sleep, Hercules interjects in surprise that his adoptive mother, Alcmene, used to sing him that lullaby. Zeus answers that he always listened.
