Recap / Hercules The Animated Series S 1 E 40 Hercules And The Prom

Go To

With prom day coming up at Prometheus High School, Hercules is mopey about not having a date for the prom. Tempest doesn't seem interested either, but when Herc learns she's head-over-heels for the teen idol Orpheus, the greatest singer in Greece, he vows to bring him to the prom if she'll go out with him. Tempest agrees (and threatens to cut his arm off if he fails), while the skeptical Cassandra says she'll go out with Icarus if they succeed in bringing Orpheus there.

Against all odds, the plan succeeds, but they're not the only Orpheus fans in town—Hades' newest recruit is a hulking monster who'll only sign on for Team Hades if he gets an Orpheus concert. Hades kidnaps the singer and brings him to the Underworld to play for the rest of his life, while Hercules goes to rescue him—and Icarus has to stall the fans until they return!

This episode contains examples of:

  • Celebrity Lie: Both Herc and Hades claim to know Orpheus to impress someone (Tempest for Herc, the titan Lastrigon for Hades).
  • Chewing the Scenery: Icarus goes full-on ham mode when using reverse psychology on Orpheus.
  • Close Up On Head: When we cut back to Icarus stalling, the camera pulls back and rotates to show that he is suspended upside down on the ceiling, apparently shoved up there by the restless crowd.
  • Hidden Depths: Despite Icarus' usual nuttiness, he knows enough about psychology to manipulate Orpheus into agreeing to make an appearance at the Prometheus Academy prom.
  • Holding the Floor: Icarus has to stall the crowd while Herc goes to the Underworld to rescue Orpheus, with Icarus thinking that Herc got the easy job.
  • The Man in the Mirror Talks Back: Hercules imagines his reflection on a fountain turning into Tempest threatening to cut off his arm. A frog on Herc's shoulder sees it too and reacts by screaming as it looks at its arm and hopping away.
  • Not on the List: Hercules tries to sneak into the Underworld to get Orpheus back.
Hercules: But I'm on the list.
Panic: Oh, yeah? Well, guess what, smart guy? There is no list.
Hercules: Then how do you know I'm not on it?
    Pain: He's got you there.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Icarus gives Orpheus one after rejecting Hercules' plea to play the prom. It actually gets Orpheus to reconsider... just as Icarus planned.
    Orpheus: Who are you?
Icarus: No, the question is, who are you! Huh? Who are you? This young man came to you for a simple wish, and do you listen to him? NO! You just grunt and play your stupid glockenspiel!
    Hercules: Icarus, that's a lyre.
Icarus: [points at Orpheus] No, sir! That's a liar! A big, fat forget-the-fans-who-made-him kind of liar! You claim to speak for the youth of today, but what do you really know about them? Don't answer that! Because we all know it's bupkis! We're glad you're not playing our prom, and do you know why? Because you are not worthy of it! Good day, sir! I said good day!
    Hercules: Icarus, what was that?
    Icarus: Reverse psychology.
    Orpheus: Wait...
    Icarus: See?
  • Rescued from the Underworld: In a twist on the trope maker, Orpheus himself has to be rescued when Hades kidnaps him for a concert.
  • Room Disservice: Pain and Panic try to kidnap Orpheus by posing as room service (with Pain posing as a roast chicken). Unfortunately, Orpheus is leaving with Herc and Icarus at that very moment, and the two minions end up getting slammed by the door and flattened against the wall.
  • Teen Idol: Orpheus is the hottest singer in Greece, with everyone except Hades recognizing and loving his work. Even Bob the Narrator has some glamour shots.
  • Unmanly Secret: Or Unamazonly Secret as the case may be. Tempest has a crush on Orpheus, a crush she is deeply ashamed of and desperately hides.
  • Unseen No More: Orpheus had been mentioned in several episodes beforehand, but this is the first time he appears in person.
