Recap / Hercules The Animated Series S 1 E 25 Hercules And The Song Of Circe

Go To

It's spring break and everyone is having fun at the beach. Icarus' insistent, Dogged Nice Guy approach to romancing Cassandra ends up with her harshly turning him down out of sheer exasperation. Herc is consoling him when the beautiful, manipulative sorceress Circe appears. She immediately enchants all men present and lures them to her island so she can pick a boyfriend. If she isn't satisfied with them, she not only dumps them but also transforms them into animals. In the end, it's up to Cassandra to save the day with her own magic powers.

Tropes:

  • Casting Gag: One of Circe's ex-boyfriends is transformed into a hyena with an Annoying Laugh. He is voiced by Jim Cummings, who voiced Ed in The Lion King and Timon & Pumbaa.
  • Forced Transformation: Circe turns all of her ex-boyfriends into animals as a way to get rid of them. Since none of them has magic, they have no say in the matter. Cassandra returns everyone to normal, but she's surprised to find the pig-men guards are actually bipedal, talking pigs.
  • The Fourth Wall Will Not Protect You: Played for Laughs when Circe hypnotizes Bob the Narrator to stop him from pointing out how evil and manipulative she is and switch it so that he's complimenting her.
Bob: Mysterious, dangerous, cunning, evil (Circe points her scepter at him) gorgeous, lovely, beautiful!
Thalia: Uhh, Bobby? You okay? I've never seen you like this now! Of course, I've never seen you at all...
  • Hypocritical Humor: Adonis mocks Icarus for having only lasted as Circe's boyfriend for five minutes, despite the fact that he only lasted three seconds.
  • Transformation Conventions: The sorceress Circe turns Herc, Adonis, and Icarus into animals. Cloud Cuckoolander Icarus becomes a duck-billed platypus and the vain Adonis changes into a peacock. Hercules, for some reason, is turned into a ring-tailed lemur, albeit a super-strong one.
  • The Vamp: Circe manages to seduce the narrator in her Establishing Character Moment.
  • Villain Song: In "One Good Man", Circe sings about manipulating the guys into competing to become her new boyfriend.
