Recap / Hell Girl S 2 E 4 Secret

Go To

In the sunset world, Ai is working on a sewing project. Meanwhile, Shuichi Yagisawa finishes his shift at a ramen shop after serving Wanyuudo's order. Shuichi's boss tells Shuichi to take some food to his bedridden wife Chinami. At a hospital run by a church, Shuichi reaches his wife's hospital room and is greeted by Hone Onna, who is disguised as a nurse. Shuichi gives Chinami the food and she says that she wants to move to a larger room where she can talk to other patients as she will be hospitalized for the foreseeable future. Chinami says that she doesn't believe that Shuichi paid for her hospital stay with lottery money and tells him not to hold grudges. This causes Shuichi to recall accessing the Hell. Shuichi downplays Chinami's concerns by saying that he's just tired and that he's had a run of good fortune lately as Hone Onna listens from the hallway. As Hone Onna leaves, she passes by the mysterious girl. Meanwhile, Ichimoku Ren waits to be interviewd for a job at a local nightclub. The nightclub's owner, Shoki, comes in and apologizes for being late and after commenting on Ren's appearance, he says that a lot of people want a job there. Houki says that Ren's new job is in a cutthroat industry and sends him off with papers containing the job description. At the hospital, Chinami suffers from severe headaches and finds the mysterious girl at her bedside when they subside. The mysterious girl asks if she's alright and calls Chinami her mother. At a café, Shuichi takes a loan, one of several that he has been using to pay for Chinami's medical care, while Ai's minions watch from outside. Wanyuudo comments that Shuichi wouldn't be resorting to this if he'd been able to get money for Chinami's hospital stay from a robbery that he was an accomplice to and that Shouki led. The robbery had taken place immediately after Shouki had been fired for using underhanded methods to get a promotion at a club. Shouki decided that he'd start his own club and rise above the people who fired him and got together with both Shuichi and another man who were down on their luck at the time to rob a warehouse where some money was being stored. Shouki had stated plans to split the cash when news of the robbery faded, but when the other man, Sakuma, tried to run off with some of it, Shouki beat him with a pipe and had Shuichi finish him off and hide the body. It turned out that Shouki actually had no plans to split the cash and instead used it to start his own club.

In the sunset world, Ai finishes her sewing project, a bag for the marbles that had been lying around the hut. Ai receives Shuichi's request, which has just been submitted, and brings Shuichi to the sunset world and gives him Ren's straw doll form, laying out the terms of the deal as she does so. Shuichi accepts the terms, saying that he believes he's damned anyway, but there are some things he needs to do before untying the thread. At the hospital, a nurse is talking to Chinami and asks her whose daughter the mysterious girl is. Chinami says that the girl is her daughter, which confuses the nurse. The girl, who Chinami calls "Ki-chan", pours her orange juice into a flower vase and is lightly scolded by Chinami. Shuichi calls Shouki and asks to meet him at a park, where he says that he is going to turn himself in for both the robbery and Sakuma's murder in exchange for his share of the money. Shouki tries to refuse, but Shuichi says that he's got nothing more to lose. Shuichi tells Shouki to bring the money by sunset or he'll also expose him. After Shouki leaves, Shuichi tries to convince himself that he's doing the right thing. Meanwhile the girl offers orange juice to the statue of the Virgin Mary in the hospital's chapel and is caught by Ai and runs off.

Shuichi shows up at the ramen shop for work. He had planned to take the day off, but wanted to do something nice for his boss before turning himself in. Shuichi's boss asks after Chinami and Shuichi says that she might be leaving the hospital soon. Shuichi's boss says that Heaven must be watching over them for making an honest living. Shouki spies Chinami in the hospital's waiting room and follows her to her room. Hone Onna tries to follow, but is interrupted by the girl, who asks for directions to the restroom and calls her an old woman. That evening, Shuichi heads to the park, but gets a text saying that Shouki is visiting Chinami. As Shuichi runs off, Wanyuudo comments that he's too trusting for his own good. When Shuichi gets to Chinami's room, Shouki says that he told her everything. Chinami is heartbroken by the news and Shouki denies any involvement with the robbery. Chinami begins suffering headaches again and Shouki demands that he never see Shuichi again. When Shuichi hesitates, Shouki breaks the nurse call button, causing Shuichi to pull the thread.

Shouki finds himself in his club with Hone Onna sitting near him. When he tries to get her attention, she recoils and runs to Ren, telling him that Shouki tried to hit on her. Ren asks why he would hit on her with "a face like that." The women comment on how creepy his face looks and Wanyuudo, who is dressed as a waiter, says that even he looks better than Shouki. Shouki demands to know if something's wrong with his face. Wanyuudo hands him a mirror, which he looks in... and recoils in horror at the sight of a hole that takes his entire face. Ai appears inside the hole and banishes Shouki to Hell. On Ai's boat, Shouki sticks his arm into the hole, laughing in amusement and commenting at how deep it is as he is ferried through Hell's gate.

Back in the world of the living, the doctors tell Shuichi that Chinami needs to rest. In the sunset world, Ai reveals that she has brought the mysterious girl, whose name is Kikuri, back with her to her minions' surprise. Ai gives Kikuri the bag of marbles, but Kikuri tears it in an attempt to open it and is scolded by the minions. At the hospital, Shuichi resolves to work hard to pay off his debts and turn himself in when Chinami gets better. He asks for Chinami's forgiveness but she wakes up with no memory of him and asks where her daughter is. A candle with Shuichi's name is lit.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Ambition Is Evil: Shouki stole the money so he could start his own club in order to prove he was better than the people who fired him. His ambition was also what got him fired for using underhanded methods to gain promotions.
  • The Blank: Shuoki gets an empty hole where his face used to be during the Hell banishment. It carries over when he's ferried to Hell proper.
  • Cruel Twist Ending: Shuichi has paid for Chinami's hospital stay and Shouki is in Hell, but Shuichi still has lots of debts to pay off and Chinami has completely forgotten him. The girl is heavily implied to be responsible for Chinami's memory loss.
  • Gory Discretion Shot: When Shouki and Shuichi kill Sakuma.
  • Healthcare Motivation: Deconstructed. Shuichi never gets the money because Shouki betrayed him and he is now a criminal and deeply in debt after taking loans to pay for Chinami's hospital stay legitimately.
  • Holy Ground: Averted. Ai and the girl can both enter the chapel with no ill effects.
  • It's All About Me: Shouki has this attitude.
  • Japanese Christian: Chinami, if her cross necklace is an indication.
  • Kick the Dog: Shouki telling Chinami everything and breaking the nurse call button qualifies as this.
  • Oblivious Guilt Slinging: Shuichi's boss does one, but it doesn't go anywhere.
  • Pipe Pain: Shouki beats Sakuma senseless with a lead pipe and makes Shuichi finish him off with it.
  • Rule of Symbolism: The straw doll lands on Chinami's cross necklace when the thread is pulled. Gee, what could that mean?
  • Self-Made Man: Shouki wants to become this to prove that he's better than the people who fired him.
  • Start My Own: All of the stolen money went into Shouki's own club.
  • Twinkle Smile: Wanyuudo does this during the Hell banishment, complete with an Audible Gleam.
