Recap / Hell Girl S 1 E 18 Bound Girl

Go To

A girl runs into a house and a woman berates her for being late. The girl, Miki Kawakami makes breakfast for the woman, Meiko Shimono. Shimono orders Miki to make a new meal for her and when Miki says that she'll be late for school, Shimono threatens to kill her dogs, which are kept in cages under the table. That evening at the grocery store, two women watch Miki go by and discuss a rumor that Shimono, who is a retired teacher, is tutoring Miki in exchange for having chores done. One of the women also mentions that Shimono quit her job after getting a large amount of inheritance money and that she was able to charm Miki's parents into agreeing to the tutoring. Miki returns to find one of her dogs fatally poisoned because one of her teachers showed up. Miki buries the dog, but Shimono demands that she make her a pot of tea. Shimono lets Miki go to avoid suspicion, telling her to study to keep the tutoring story afloat. Miki returns home and submits Shimono's name to the Hell Correspondence. Miki's mother wonders how she's doing. As Ai looks on, Miki lies about her dogs being missing.

At Hajime's house, Tsugumi has a vision of Miki receiving a straw doll from Ai. Hajime gets Tsugumi to give him directions and finds his way to Shibata Town. Hajime asks around and finds out about Shimono's inheritance money and about Miki. Miki goes back to Shimono's house and Shimono tells her that she'll kill the other dog if Miki tries anything. Miki thinks to herself that she can end it with the straw doll. In the sunset realm, Ichimoku Ren says that it's been three days since Miki got the doll and Hone Onna comments that Wanyuudo must be bored. Wanyuudo tells them that he and Miki have conversations, although said conversations are rather one-sided. At a café, Hajime gets some information about Miki and Shimono from one of his contacts. The contact also tells him about Miki's dogs. Hajime figures that the dogs were the only ones that Miki could talk to. Hajime draws the connection between the dogs going missing and Shimono's tutoring. Shimono hits Miki and demands to know what she told Hajime, who has been poking around in the area. Miki denies saying anything, but Shimono goes off to kill the dog. Miki nearly unties the thread, but Shimono demands to know why the remaining dog has a litter of puppies.

The next day, Miki returns to find her other dog dead. When Miki demands to know why Shimono poisoned her dog, Shimono begins ranting that Miki is trying to poison her and steal her fortune. Miki recalls that her dogs got away from her when she was walking them and one bit Shimono's leg and the other tore up her yard. Miki threatens to tell someone, but Shimono says she'll kill the puppies if anyone finds out. Miki wonders why she didn't pull the thread sooner. Tsugumi brings Hajime a new set of clothes and wonders if what the Hell Girl is doing is wrong, saying that all of Ai's victims thus far have all been wrongdoers of some form. Hajime says that it is a bad thing because it is irreversible whoever makes a contract with Ai is also digging their own grave. Tsugumi says that bad people need to be punished, but Hajime tells her not to look at the world in black and white. Their conversation is interrupted by a police officer arriving at Shimono's house with Miki's teacher, who was suspicious of Shimono. Shimono says she is going to kill the puppies. Hajime leads the officer and the teacher inside and the officer requests backup. Shimono thinks that they are after her fortune and tries to drive them away while Miki tells Hajime that Shimono killed her dogs. The police eventually figure out that Shimono killed her parents to get the inheritance and killed her son to keep it. Hajime tries to get Miki to give up the straw doll, but Miki runs off to find the puppies. Miki finds that Shimono drowned the puppies and unties the thread.

In a police car, Shimono says that she had to kill her parents to get her fortune and that she'll be damned if some kid gets it. Wanyuudo, acting as the driver, asks if that's why she killed her child. Shimono says that she'll kill anyone who crosses her, but Hone Onna says that she's an amateur at murder and Ichimoku Ren tells Shimono that she's the victim this time. Shimono is horrified to see a giant baby staring at her through the windshield. Ren and Hone Onna's heads become dog's heads. Further ahead on the road, Ai recites her banishment speech and a street sign appears, directing the car onto a literal highway to Hell. On Ai's boat, Shimono demands to be sent back before "they" steal "her" money. Ai asks Shimono if she wants to go back looking like she does, which prompts Shimono to look at her reflection in the water. Shimono wails in despair when she sees that her face has become a dog's face. Ai ferries her through Hell's gate. In the world of the living, Miki regrets that she didn't pull the thread sooner. A candle with Miki's name is lit.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Bad People Abuse Animals: Shimono kills both of Miki's dogs and drowns the newborn puppies in the bathtub.
  • Big "NO!":
    • Shimono has one when she sees her face while on Ai's boat.
    • And Miki, when she discovers the fate of the puppies.
  • Black-and-White Morality: Tsugumi thinks that the banishment targets thus far being bad people who went unpunished automatically justifies them being sent to Hell. What she doesn't consider is that Ai's clients pay the price for it.
  • Break the Cutie: Poor Miki goes through an awful ordeal at the hands of Shimono. She can't even take comfort from sending Shimono to Hell in the end, and is last seen lamenting that she didn't pull the thread right away to save her dogs.
  • Despair Event Horizon: The puppies being killed was this for Miki.
  • Greed: Shimono killed her parents to get their money and then killed her son to keep it for herself.
  • Hope Spot: Hajime almost gets this one. Shimono is arrested, but Miki discovers that she had drowned the puppies before the police arrived, causing her to finally snap and pull the thread.
  • Kick the Dog: Shimono is unable to do this literally because of her leg, but does kill the dogs and act like it's Miki's fault. She gets what's coming to her in the end.
  • Offing the Offspring: Shimono killed her son right along with her parents.
  • Pater Familicide: Gender-Inverted example. Shimono killed her parents and her son and got away with it.
  • The Paranoiac: Shimono, obviously, considering she killed her family to get all the money to herself. We can guess this is one reason why she held Miki's dogs hostage and why she's so reclusive.
  • Revenge Before Reason: Miki pulls the thread even though Shimono would probably have spent the rest of her life in prison anyway.
  • Senseless Sacrifice: Miki damning both herself and Shimono to hell after seeing that she drowned the newborn puppies, even though Shimono has already been arrested for the murders of her parents and infant child.
  • Wham Shot: Shimono accidentally kicks up the dirt in her garden while struggling against the police, revealing the remains of her dead son.
