Recap / Haven S 4 E 1 Fallout

Go To

Continuing where "Thanks For The Memories" left off, Duke leaps into The Barn and is shocked at seeing the endless white hallway. The place starts breaking apart, revealing there is nothing but a dark void outside. Duke runs through the hallway calling for Audrey. Scenes that happened inside The Barn from the previous episode start playing on the walls, floor, and ceiling as if they are movie screens. As Duke stops, amazed, the floor he's standing on breaks and he falls screaming into the void.

The next thing he knows, he falls into water. He tries to swim up, but finds several children laughing at him. He's inside the Boston Aquarium. Duke is arrested for trespassing. As the police drag him out of the building, he frantically screams Audrey Parker's name and begs to know where she is and if she is safe. A young woman is watching this on the news. When she hears Duke say "Audrey Parker", she quickly turns off the TV and rushes out of her room.

Duke is in a hospital bed, handcuffed to the bed's railing, and interrogated by Boston detective Mack Allen, who demands to know how he got into the aquarium without anybody seeing him. Duke asks if they called Nathan Wuornos from Haven PD like he requested, but the detective says there was no one there by that name. According to all accounts, Duke Crocker has been declared dead for six months. The detective found several fake ID's in Duke's wallet. He declares that once Duke is medically cleared, he plans to prosecute him to the full extent of the law, and that Boston PD is not as lax as Haven PD.

Meanwhile, in Haven, a bookstore is annihilated by a strong gust of wind.

A nurse checks on Duke. He begs her to let him use her cellphone, but she refuses. She adds that Duke's sister has come to visit. Duke is confused, as he doesn't have a sister, but when the nurse says the woman said her name was "Audrey", he perks up. The nurse says they have 15 minutes and walks out. The woman who saw him on the news walks in, saying she can't believe he's real. She introduces herself as Jennifer Mason. Six months ago, she was working in a cubicle at The Boston Globe when she suddenly heard every conversation that happened in The Barn, over and over again. Everyone assumed she had gone crazy and shunned her. She needed to find him to prove to herself she wasn't just hearing voices. Duke realizes that she is the best hope of finding Audrey. Jennifer has never been to Haven and has never heard of The Troubles, so he gives a brief explanation and assures that she is not crazy. He asks her to help him escape and come with him to Haven to find Audrey. She says the voices stopped ever since she took medication, but he says they'll figure it out. She's worried about the police, but he says all she has to do is hand him a paperclip (and his pants).

Duke and Jennifer walk out of the hospital with Duke disguised as a doctor. She is a bit upset that Duke made her flash her breasts at the doctor to distract him so Duke could knock him out. As she retrieves her car, he uses her cellphone. Nathan's phone is no longer in service. He calls a different number and gets Dave Teagues. Dave thinks this is a prank call, but Duke proves it is him by revealing Dave's dark secret: he's a fan of Oprah Winfrey. Dave is amazed and says he knows Duke and Audrey were in The Barn when it was destroyed, so everyone thought they were dead. Duke has been gone for six months, while by Duke's reckoning, he was only in The Barn for about a minute. Duke theorizes this is why Audrey doesn't age, because she was being jumped forward through time every 27 years. Duke says if he left The Barn and The Troubles are still there, then Audrey must still be there, somewhere.

Duke and Jennifer stop at a gas station/diner and are shocked to find Nathan. Nathan, sporting a beard, is letting a biker gang beat him up for money, then blowing the money on beer. The gang is amazed about how he doesn't react to their blows. Duke walks up and Nathan happily hugs him (Duke complains because Nathan hasn't had a bath in ages), then asks where Audrey is.

In a bar somewhere, Audrey works as a bartender and waitress. She has long brown hair, punk-style clothing, and a Southern accent. She is now Lexie.

As they gas Jennifer's car and get some food, Nathan cleans himself up and shaves. Nathan explains that after the meteor shower bombarding Haven finally stopped, he tried to help rebuild, but The Guard wanted revenge for him stopping The Troubles from ending and tried to kill him. He was eventually forced to quit Haven PD and go on the run. He says he will go with Duke and Jennifer to Haven to see if they can find Audrey. It will be risky, but he needs to make up for his selfish mistake that made a lot of people suffer.

Vince and Dave examine the destroyed bookstore. Dwight Hendrickson, now the Chief of Police for Haven PD, arrives on the scene. They find no traces of an explosion, so it must be a Trouble, not a bomb. Dwight hears a report that a man was found encased in glass at the beach and leaves. Dave mentions Duke is alive and Vince gets upset that he didn't tell him sooner.

Lexie talks with fellow waitress Rhonda and says she wishes she could meet a real man instead of their usual idiotic, perverted customers. A man walks in and orders a drink. Lexie eyes him up.

Nathan, Duke, and Jennifer drive into Haven, and are immediately stopped by The Guard and held at gunpoint. Led by Jordan, they say Nathan was a fool to come back and prepare to kill him. Vince and Dave show up and order them to stand down. Vince reminds Jordan that Nathan saved her life when Duke shot her, but she says that doesn't make up for preventing their horrible conditions from going away. Dwight shows up and says their guns are now useless. Duke explains to Jennifer about how Dwight attracts bullets to himself. Jordan stands down and hands Dwight her shotgun. Duke introduces Jennifer and explains her Trouble. Jennifer tells The Guard something she overheard from The Barn: that if Audrey kills the person she loves, it will end The Troubles forever. Nathan says they plan to find Audrey, then convince her to kill him. Of course, for this to work, they can't kill him. Suddenly, a tornado appears and everyone takes cover.

While serving him, Lexie flirts with the man, who introduces himself as William. Lexie says her shift will end in about an hour and hints she wants to go some place private and have sex.

The tornado dissipates. The Guard members leave when Vince orders them to check the town for casualties, and Dwight tells the trio to come with him to the police station. Nathan reveals to a horrified Duke that he wasn't bluffing, he really does plan to make Audrey kill him to end The Troubles. Duke reminds him that he has to be Audrey's true love, and Nathan says he's never been so sure about anything in his entire life.

As William and Lexie talk, a sinister looking man walks in and takes a seat. Lexie spots a gun on his belt and gets worried, saying the police takes over 45 minutes to arrive here. The man points to Lexie and beckons her to come over. William says he is sure she can handle it by herself and goes to put money in the jukebox, while she looks at him like he's out of his mind.

As they enter the police station, a few cops are happy that Nathan is back. Dwight explains that he took over as Chief of Police after Nathan quit to continue protecting the town from The Troubles, but it has been really hard. He shows them pictures of the destroyed bookstore and of the beach, where a dead body was found burned to a crisp and covered with volcanic glass. Duke says he's seen this before; it can be caused by a lightning strike melting the sand into glass. Nathan says there is only one person he knows with a weather-related Trouble: Marion Caldwell (see "Welcome To Haven"). Jennifer says she's hungry and needs to take her medication, so Duke asks Officer Stan to escort her to The Grey Gull. It should be closed down, but it should have plenty of food left and she can rest there.

Jordan and Vince talk. Vince says he trusts that Nathan will do the right thing when they find Audrey. Jordan mocks Vince, Nathan, and Duke for them all being so hopelessly in love with Audrey. Vince gets upset and tells her to go home.

Lexie asks for the man's order, but he shows her his gun and orders her to sit.

Nathan, Duke, and Dwight find the weather going crazy again. They enter Marion's house, only to find that it is freezing inside. Duke and Dwight are barely able to stand it, while Nathan can handle it because of his Trouble of having no sense of touch. Nathan tells the other two to fall back. Dwight warns him that the cold will eventually get to him too, so hurry up. Nathan enters a room and finds Marion sitting in a chair. She bitterly welcomes him back and says it is his fault she is like this. Ice spreads through the room.

Marion says because he shot Agent Howard and destroyed The Barn, The Troubles are here to stay, and now she's losing control of the weather again. Nathan says he knows it is his fault, but she is hurting innocent people. Marion is shocked and they realize she doesn't know what the weather was doing. She explains that she lost control when her boyfriend Conrad died of a heart attack the other day. Nathan looks around and finds Conrad's corpse frozen in ice.

Lexie tells the man that the bar barely has any money, but he sneers and says he's interested in something else. Suddenly, William slams a pool cue on the man's hand and makes him drop the gun. They fight, and the man runs away when William grabs the gun. Lexie thanks him for saving her.

Outside the house, Vince and Dave meet up with Duke and Dwight. Nathan says he knows how she feels, but she has to accept that Conrad is dead and let him go. Marion is enraged and lightning strikes all around town. Nathan gets covered in ice and grows weaker. He explains how he loved Audrey and wasn't able to let her go, and because of his selfishness, he's ruined Haven. He collapses. Marion realizes he is right and cries, as the storm dissipates. Nathan leads Marion out, and the Teagues lead her away. Dwight thanks Nathan and hands him a badge, saying he wants to hire him back as a regular police officer. Duke encourages him to accept, as such a position should provide resources to find Audrey.

Duke goes to The Grey Gull and is shocked to find it is active with many customers. Jennifer, sipping a margarita, greets him and says the place is awesome, and so is its owner. It turns out that Duke's brother Wade Crocker took over the place while Duke was missing. Wade walks up and hugs Duke, happy to find him alive.

William says he suspects the man was trying to prevent Lexie from learning the truth. She asks what he means, and he says he knows that she is really another person with an important destiny. She says he's creeping her out, but he says he's serious. If she doesn't remember who she really is soon, a lot of people will die.

  • Bait-and-Switch Character Intro: Jennifer is implied, before her face is shown, to be Audrey—even impersonates her in order to get into Duke's hospital room.
  • Call-Back:
    • Marion Caldwell is the one causing destructive weather phenomenon, due to grief over losing her husband, Conrad.
    • Vince and Dave pull up in Dave's van. It ends up getting torched by a bolt of lightning.
  • Beard of Sorrow: Nathan's got one.
  • Blood from the Mouth: Nathan is found letting bikers punch him in the face for money, and even though he can't feel it, it's doing some damage, as he spits out a mouthful of blood.
  • Continuity Lock-Out: Jennifer has it, of course, but listening to Duke try to explain things to her is pretty funny.
Jennifer: Who is that woman? (referring to Jordan, who has Nathan at gunpoint)
Duke: Jordan McKee. Her and Nathan used to have a thing, but then he dumped her and I shot her and the whole thing got weird.
  • Continuity Nod: Duke's brother Wade arrives, which seems to come out of nowhere, but has been alluded to before.
  • Crisis Catch-and-Carry: Duke picks up Jennifer around the waist and bodily carries her behind a truck to avoid the tornado that's about to touch down.
  • Debut Queue: The episode adds three new characters not only into this story arc, but sequentially within the episode—with Jennifer, William, and Wade being introduced respectively.
  • Devoted to You: Jordan "doesn't see the appeal" of the "torch" Vince, Duke, and Nathan carry for Audrey and her incarnations.
  • Escape from the Crazy Place: Subverted in that it's a normal hospital, but Duke still needs to break out to avoid arrest and being labelled crazy because there's no rational explanation for what happens in Haven.
  • Gas Leak Cover-Up: Even Vince and Dave are getting tired of this excuse to explain away the Troubles.
  • Hollywood New England: The officer who arrests Duke has a thick Boston accent, though it bears only a passing resemblance to a real one.
  • Hug and Comment: Duke ruins the heartfelt moment between him and Nathan to tell him that he smells bad.
  • Insane No More: Jennifer is floored to find out Duke actually exists, as it suggests that her doctors' diagnosis of schizophrenia due to Hearing Voices is wrong and she did not actually lose her mind six months ago.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Duke quotes the trope almost word for word when Jennifer is hesitant to help him break out of the hospital because he's "some kind of criminal."
  • Kids Are Cruel: A group of kids just point and laugh at Duke in the aquarium tank, instead of trying to get help.
  • Killed Offscreen: Conrad dies from a heart attack, kickstarting Marion's weather Trouble. His corpse is seen in an armchair in their home as Nathan talks her down.
  • Man Hug: In a heartwarming moment, when Nathan sees Duke is alive, he pulls him in for an enthusiastic and relieved hug. Given their usual relationship (which Duke had just told Jennifer was "complicated"), it's nice to see.
  • Moral Myopia: Nathan is having some guilt about his single-minded drive to save Audrey in the last episode, since it just made everything worse for everyone.
  • Multiple Identity IDs: Duke is caught with several fake driver's licenses when he is arrested for trespassing in Boston.
  • My Death Is Just the Beginning: Nathan is single-minded in finding Audrey so she can kill him to end the Troubles.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Nathan shooting Howard messed up the Barn's cycle. Duke, Audrey, and James were presumed dead, and the Troubles didn't leave. On top of that, Nathan is laying low because the Guard wants to kill him. Good job, Nathan!
  • No One Could Survive That!: Duke was thought to be dead, considering from the perspective of anyone outside the Barn, he was inside when it exploded.
  • Power Profit Potential: Nathan exploits his Feel No Pain Trouble by letting bikers punch him in the face for cash. His nonplussed reaction amazes them, and when Duke finds him, he's got a line of people waiting.
  • Psychic Link: Jennifer appears to have one with the Barn, as she can hear the voices of Audrey, Duke, and Howard.
  • Rewatch Bonus: Nearly all of the scenes with William, but in particular the fist fight between the guy with the gun and William, which is clearly staged.
  • Show Some Leg: Jennifer casually mentions having flashed an orderly on their way out. Duke insists he only told her they needed a distraction, and Jennifer points out that that it worked. Duke concedes it did.
  • Super Not-Drowning Skills: Duke survives being unceremoniously dropped by the Barn into a tank at the Boston Aquarium.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: Duke is fished out of the tank at the aquarium...and then promptly arrested for trespassing. When the police find he's carrying several fake ID cards, he's handcuffed to his hospital bed so he's not a flight risk.
  • Third-Person Flashback: Duke sees Audrey's memories as the Barn implodes around him.
  • Trust Password: Duke calls The Herald and gets Dave, who doesn't believe it's him. Duke reveals Dave is a fan of Oprah Winfrey, which is enough to convince Dave he's telling the truth.
  • Weird Weather: The episode opens with a windstorm that blows out the window of the bookstore, and continues with a random tornado that touches down in the middle of town and finally the Arctic tundra that is Marion Caldwell's house.
  • Wham Shot: Audrey is alive—but isn't Audrey anymore.
  • Vigilante Militia: The Guard has gone from underground group Nathan had to carefully infiltrate to driving around in groups armed and attempting Vigilante Execution in half a season. There's also a brewing mutiny in the ranks, as Jordan refuses to take a direct order from Vince and tells him later that there's been talk about his lack of loyalty amongst the other members.
  • Year Outside, Hour Inside: Duke spent only a few minutes in the Barn, but six months has passed in the real world.
