Recap / Harley Quinn 2019 S 3 E 4 A Thief A Mole An Orgy

Go To

Harley and Ivy infiltrate the Court of Owls to figure out who kidnapped Frank.

Tropes:

  • Artistic License: Gordon's series of accidental dick pics requires his cell phone to be able to take pictures while the flashlight function is active. These functions are mutually exclusive: either the camera wouldn't have worked at all, or the light would have turned off and at best the flash would have gone off for each picture, making the end result fairly obvious.
  • Blackmail: Thanks to the Court of Owls kicking his phone around, Gordon gets a plethora of genital pics to blackmail the richest people in Gotham.
  • Butt-Monkey: Even with a pipe through his chest, the comatose mayor is polling higher than Gordon, who is seen as "mean" for running against a guy in a coma.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Joker has a bunch of Villy Award statuettes in his house.
    • The sex lube passed out for the party is provided by the Legion of Dildos, now a LexCorp subsidiary.
  • Cover Innocent Eyes and Ears: When Joker is describing the Court of Owls as "a bunch of old straight white dudes jerking each other off", he tells his son to put on his headphones.
  • Evil Stole My Faith: Played for Laughs; Upon realizing that Henry Kissinger is still alive, Gordon proclaims that God doesn't exist.
  • Famous, Famous, Fictional: Inverted. Two-Face's suggestions for rich donors are Batman villains Carmine Falcone and Ra's al Ghul, with Henry Kissinger as the real-world name.
  • Fan Disservice: Suffice it to say that the Court of Owls, and their many genitals, are for the most part past their prime.
  • Liar Revealed: Ivy claims that Catwoman keeps texting her and telling the crew not to touch her stuff so Harley will give her some peace, driving Harley to bust up the security cameras so Catwoman will stop spying on them, a fact she denies when Frank is kidnapped. Sy reveals the latter to Ivy while Catwoman reveals the former to Harley.
  • Literal Metaphor: Joker describes the Court of Owls as just "a bunch of old straight white dudes jerking each other off". You'd be forgiven for thinking on your first watch that he is just saying he thinks they are a bunch of pretentious snobs who think they are better than everyone else. Only for it to turn out that nope. Joker was not exaggerating in the slightest.
  • Motive Decay: According to Joker, the Court of Owls shifted their purpose from bankrolling shady operations throughout Gotham to hosting mass orgies.
  • Mythology Gag: Bruce Wayne is wearing a horned owl mask at the Court of Owls meeting and Gordon jokingly calls him Owlman, both references to Batman's Earth-3 Evil Counterpart from the comics. Amusingly, one version of Owlman was connected to the Court of Owls in the main continuity, though he was never identified as Owlman explicitly.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Because Ivy couldn't be honest with Harley and lies to her about Catwoman's restrictions on her penthouse so she can focus on her work, Harley responds to Catwoman's "restrictions" by destroying all of her security cameras in her penthouse to spite her. But with all the cameras destroyed, Frank gets kidnapped and no one knows who took him.
  • Offerings to the Gods: The Court of Owls opens their meetings by sacrificing a goat. However, some of the newer members have been lodging complaints about the practice, so they've switched to a goat pinata.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: The Court of Owls mask does virtually nothing to hide the wearer's identity. Harley, Ivy, and Bane don't even bother dressing for the occasion, and Gordon can pick out Bruce Wayne by his shoulders and jawline.
  • A Party, Also Known as an Orgy: The main event of the Court of Owls is a giant orgy.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Ivy avoiding being upfront with Harley about her needing quiet to work not only cause more delays, but it also makes Harley frustrated enough to destroy the security cameras. This would backfire when Frank gets kidnapped while they're away and they have no video evidence of who did it.
  • The Shadow Knows: Bruce Wayne wearing a horned owl mask gives his shadow the exact same silhouette he has wearing his Batman cowl. Ironically, Gordon doesn't pick up on this, instead deducing from his broad shoulders and jawline that he's Bruce Wayne.
  • Something Else Also Rises: Inverted with Bane. When the orgy is cut short, he has a giant sub sandwich strategically covering his manhood which droops in tandem with his disappointment.
  • Something We Forgot: Harley and Ivy get distracted by their relationship issues and end up participating in the orgy (and ruining it by turning on the lights). Meanwhile, Frank is somewhere Strapped to an Operating Table.
  • Take That!:
    • Two-Face suggests getting money from Carmine Falcone, Ra's al Ghul, and Henry Kissinger.
Gordon: That monster isn't dead yet? God really doesn't exist.
    • The Joker is introduced trying to help his son do his homework, only to get incredibly frustrated by Common Core math.
Joker: "How'd you come up with the answer?!" I don't know, maybe because my son can count to freaking seven!
    • When Harley realizes he claimed to be playing softball on the days he attended Court of Owls meetings, his response is, "I was lying! What grown man plays on a softball team?"
  • Voice with an Internet Connection: Sy Borg returns, now connected directly to the internet and capable of accessing any information the gang asks of him.
