Recap / Harley Quinn 2019 S 1 E 9 A Seat At The Table

Go To

Harley falls into old habits as her crew chafes at their new position in the Legion of Doom.

Tropes:

  • Accidental Misnaming: Luthor refers to his assistant as "Esteban," even though the man's name is Steve. Luthor just doesn't care to correct himself.
  • Bait the Dog: Joker seems to respect Harley for who she is now, praising her initiative and development, and caps it off by taking Harley with him when escaping Batman. He then reveals he never changed when he dumps her out of the helicopter to delay Batman yet again.
  • Butt-Monkey: King Shark, Clayface, and especially Dr. Psycho are treated as mooks, despite having special abilities, and assigned to work with Bane.
  • Cassandra Truth: Harley's crew doesn't believe her when she insists that she was only meeting with Joker to get them out of working with Bane, since she was caught on camera kissing him.
  • Cliffhanger: Ivy is captured when trying to destroy Planetwide Pavers, who knew she was coming.
  • Downer Ending: This episode ends on one of the lowest points of the series. The Joker throws Harley under the bus yet again, Harley's crew all quit on her when they think she's putting herself before them, and Poison Ivy ends up being captured when she tries to pull a solo job.
  • Evil Is Petty:
    • Joker pays Todd at the juice shop to deliberately call Bane "Bang".
    • Bane, in turn, decides to blow up Todd for never getting his name right.
    • It's implied that Joker set up the entire "date" in which he'd leave Harley to be captured by Batman again just to spite her for shutting down his TV tower idea.
  • Foreshadowing: The advert for Planetwide Pavers prominently features shots of plants and animal habitats being destroyed, an odd choice that makes more sense if it was produced as bait for Ivy.
  • Lethally Stupid: When Bane has King Shark plant a bomb inside the smoothie shop to blow up Todd, he doesn't wait until King Shark leaves the shop and detonates the bomb with him still inside. Luckily, he survived the blast and only has his fin blown off. To add insult to injuries, Todd wasn't even working that day.
  • Literal-Minded: Frank hires a guy named Chaz to be his "pot guy" and carry him around. Ivy points out that Chaz is a marijuana dealer and Frank misunderstood his ad, which Frank acknowledges.
  • Magical Security Cam: Tawny somehow gets a shot of Harley kissing Joker from outside the helicopter the two are in.
  • Malicious Misnaming: Todd the juice cashier keeps referring to Bane as "Bang," which in any other instance would be considered Bullying a Dragon were it not for the fact that the equally dangerous Joker is paying him to do so.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • Luthor nicknames his assistant "Esteban," despite his name actually being Steve. It's a reference to Esteban Garcia, Luthor's Spanish voice actor in Superman: The Animated Series.
    • This certainly would not be the first guy named Todd who could end up getting blown up and then put six feet under because of the Joker.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Harley's crew see the photo of her and Joker kissing on live TV and immediately assume that she got back together with him. When she tries to explain what actually happened, none of them believe her. It ends up biting Ivy specifically in the ass when the factory she was raiding turns out to have known she was coming and capture her, a fate that could've been avoided if she'd let Harley come along as originally planned.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Harley's crew call her out on her selfishness, putting her Legion of Doom duties before them, and going back to Joker again and they all leave and quit in disgust, especially Ivy. Somewhat undermined by the fact that they're basing their claims off of false assumptions.
  • Shout-Out: Joker says that he's been rewatching Scrubs, and he wonders where Zach Braff has gone. Harley thinks they killed him, but Joker is pretty sure Braff is still alive, just not working as much.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: When the crew sees Black Manta chuck Dr. Psycho against a wall in the Legion of Doom training video, Clayface asks what he said to anger Black Manta so. "Nothing racist," he replies.
  • Sympathy for the Devil: Even Batman is appalled by the way Joker treats Harley, and is sincerely sympathetic to her when he hangs her out to dry yet again.
  • Very Loosely Based on a True Story: Frank and Ivy discuss a pear tree that became a stuck-up asshole after surviving 9/11, with Ivy claiming said tree was already an asshole. While the tree does exist and is, indeed, famous for surviving the attack, we'll have to take their word on said tree being an asshole.
  • Wham Episode: Dr. Psycho, Clayface and King Shark quit Harley's crew, Ivy gives up on Harley, and Ivy is captured when she decides to attack the Planetwide Pavers factory on her own, not realizing that they know she's coming and have set up a trap.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: Dr. Psycho is brought back to the Legion of Doom, only to learn that he, Clayface, and King Shark are reduced to mooks.
