Leela’s Birthday Party

Manny and the tools are having a grand old time at Leela’s birthday party- until Fluffy accidentally pops the bouncy castle.

Tropes in “Leela’s Birthday Party” include:

  • Amazing Technicolor Wildlife: The fake donkey in Leela’s game of “Pin The Tail On The Donkey” is somewhere between pinkish and purple; this is justified, as it’s a cartoon image of an animal meant for a party game.
  • Birthday Episode: It’s Leela’s birthday, and Manny ends up having to fix her bouncy castle after Fluffy claws a hole in it.
  • Blind Without 'Em: This ensues when “Lopey Lopart, The Birthday Clown” tries to do magic tricks and ends up knocking his glasses off (and sending them flying) with his wand. The kids at the party subsequently have a great deal of fun pretending to be explorers while looking for his lost glasses.
  • Call-Back: Remember in “Bunny In The Basement”, when Mr. Lopart decided to become “Lopey Lopart, The Birthday Clown”? Well, he ends up trotting the clown act out for Leela as an apology after Fluffy pops her bouncy castle.
  • Continuity Nod: A twofer occurs at one point, when Felipe sings “De Colores”, while accompanied by Lopey Lopart on his kazoo.
  • It's the Best Whatever, Ever!:
Leela: This is the greatest party ever!
  • Kazoos Mean Silliness: “Lopey Lopart, The Birthday Clown” tries to entertain the kids by playing a kazoo.
  • Kids Prefer Boxes: When Pat sees Leela’s present at the beginning of the episode, he shows that hammers do as well, and mixes this with a bit of Comically Missing the Point:
Pat: Woo-wee! I’d sure like a pretty box like this for my birthday! Boxes are awesome.
  • Knew It All Along: Pat claims this after Turner responds to the above exchange by telling him that the present for Leela is the puzzle inside the box.
  • Pet Dress-Up: While working as “Lopey Lopart, The Birthday Clown”, Mr. Lopart outfits Fluffy with a rainbow wig and fake nose similar to his own.
  • Series Continuity Error: Leela, despite what she did in her debut episode, here shows no signs of thinking of Turner as “Tooly”, and no one else ever references that either, even though you’d think the other tools would want to tease Turner about it at least once.

Abuelito’s Mower

Abuelito’s old push mower is broken- unfortunately, it’s so old that they don’t make replacement parts for it anymore. Has Manny finally encountered something he can’t fix?

”Abuelito’s Mower” provides examples of:

  • Birthday Episode: Downplayed; it’s Fluffy’s birthday, but the whole episode isn’t devoted to this fact.
  • Continuity Nod: Rusty is once-again shown to like bananas.
  • Covered in Gunge: An Offscreen Crash leaves Mr. Lopart splattered with ice-cream tuesdae.
  • "Everybody Laughs" Ending: One occurs after Felipe offers to mow Abuelito’s lawn, and, upon being reminded that Abuelito likes to get his yard work done slowly, says he’ll push really slowly.
  • Exact Words: When the tools are playing horseshoes with U-shaped bolts, and Pat falls on the horseshoe stick and gets it stuck in his claw.
    Pat: Did I win?
Stretch: Well, Pat is closest to the stick.
  • I Can't Hear You: When Señor Alvarez tries to demonstrate a very loud riding lawnmower for Abuelito.
    Abuelito: I don’t think I like it.
Señor Alvarez: You said you like this one?
  • New Job as the Plot Demands: Apparently, Señor Alvarez owns a lawnmower shop.
  • Offscreen Crash: One happens when Mr. Lopart tries to get the container for his ice-cream tuesdaes open.
  • Pun: Mr. Lopart is celebrating Fluffy’s birthday with ice-cream tuesdaes- not sundaes, tuesdays, since Fluffy’s birthday is on a Tuesday that year.
  • Severely Specialized Store: Señor Alvarez apparently owns a store that sells lawnmowers, and only lawnmowers. Bizarrely, this isn’t Played for Laughs; the characters and the story treat it as being something completely normal.
  • Stealth Pun: Once again, Rusty the monkey wrench is shown to like bananas.
