All Tools On Deck

At Abuelito’s behest, Manny returns to Lake Nochanailin to fix a cabin’s stuck front door; unfortunately, his tools are more interested in partying on the beach than working. While Squeeze, Stretch, Turner, and Pat are put to work taking out the door, Dusty, Rusty, and Felipe are left unsupervised- and somehow end up on a rowboat, stranded in the middle of the lake.

“All Tools On Deck” includes:

  • Beach Episode: Manny and the tools return to the shores of Lake Nochanailin in order to fix a cabin's door; while there, the tools are more interested in having some beach fun than working, and Dusty's fooling around ends up leaving her, Felipe, and Rusty stranded on a boat in the middle of the lake.
  • Call-Back: The whole episode is one big reference to “A Very Handy Vacation”; the main plot involves Manny having to go back to Lack Nochanailin to fix a stuck door on the cabin he and Abuelito stayed in during that episode, and little nods to other events of “Vacation” are present (such as Mr. Lopart being unable to find Fluffy again, and the tools immediately starting to play the same beach games they played in “Vacation” upon arrival at the lake).
  • Continuity Nod: In the episode’s opening, the tools are playing checkers, something Abuelito taught them to do in “Tool In A China Shop”. Pat is even shown as having a propensity for falling on the checkerboard and messing up the game, which is what he did at the end of that episode.
  • Enter Stage Window: Due to the door of the cabin being stuck, Manny finds himself having to climb in through a window in order to get at the door’s hinges (which he needs to take out in order to unstick it).
  • Exact Words: Abuelito says that he needs the door of the cabin at Lake Nochanailin fixed because some “important guests” will be coming to stay in the cabin; at the end of the episode, it turns out that those “important guests” are none other than Manny and the tools.
  • Gone Horribly Right: Mr. Lopart tries to lure Fluffy (who had been hiding due to not wanting to go to the vet) to him with a can of tuna; Fluffy runs to the tuna so fast that she bowls Mr. Lopart over, and then eats the tuna and runs off again before he’s able to catch her.
  • Knew It All Along: Rusty (who spent his entire time stuck on the rowboat panicking and believing all hope was lost) claims to have known Manny was coming to rescue them all along after Manny is able to bring the boat back to shore.
  • Pun-Based Title: On the nautical phrase “all hands on deck”.
  • Seesaw Catapult: Pat accidentally causes a ruler to act like a miniature version of one, launching a jar across the room and straight into the other tools’ checker game. (As for why he was on the other side of the room from the checkerboard, that was so he couldn’t fall on the board and mess up the game.)
  • Stock Animal Diet: Lopart lures Fluffy (today’s vet day, she’s hiding) with can of tuna.
  • Stock Ness Monster: The cabin has a photo of one of these rising out of Lake Nochanailin framed on its wall.
  • Talk Like a Pirate: Felipe and Dusty engage in some of this to entertain themselves while they (and Rusty) sit in the rowboat.
  • Tempting Fate: Dusty and Felipe engage in this while trying to convince Rusty to sit in the rowboat with them.
Dusty: The boat is tied to the dock, Rusty! It can’t go anywhere!
Felipe: Si. What could possibly go wrong?
  • What Could Possibly Go Wrong?: Said by Felipe in the above quote. As it turns out, Dusty could fall on the rope keeping the rowboat tied to the dock, severing it and sending the three of them adrift in the lake.

Tool Dance

Manny goes to Maria and Oleg’s dance studio to fix a disco ball which they need for their performance that night. The repair is simple to do and quickly completed… but just when it seems like Manny’s work is done, Oleg slips and sprains his ankle.

“Tool Dance” provides examples of the following tropes:

  • Alliterative Name: Maria Medina has one.
  • Blatant Lies: Turner engages in this whenever the other tools see him dancing.
    Squeeze: Turner, are you dancing?
Turner: Dancing? I, uh, ahem, no, no. Not this tool.
    (Later in the episode)
    Felipe: Turner? Are you dancing?
    Turner: Me? Dancing? No way.
  • Brick Joke:
    • While Maria and Oleg are rehearsing for their dance recital, Turner tries to dance by himself, is seen doing so by the other tools, and immediately denies that he was dancing. Later in the episode, during the actual recital, he dances in the wings of the stage and the exact same thing happens.
    • In the beginning of the episode, upon hearing that Manny’s latest repair will be at a dance studio, Pat tries to demonstrate his “dance moves” and ends up falling over. At the end of the episode, he does the exact same thing, prompting an "Everybody Laughs" Ending.
  • Chekhov's Skill: Manny’s ability to do a salsa dance (which he demonstrates with Kelly in the latter’s store) ends up coming in handy (no pun intended) when Oleg sprains his leg and Maria needs a new dance partner.
  • Crisis Makes Perfect: While dancing the salsa with Kelly in her store, Manny falls over when attempting the dance’s “big finish” movie. While acting as Maria’s replacement dance partner in the dance recital, he’s able to pull off the “big finish” perfectly.
  • Diabolus ex Machina: Just when the disco ball has been fixed and it looks like Manny’s work at the dance studio is done, Oleg sprains his ankle while doing stretches and is thus rendered unable to perform.
  • "Everybody Laughs" Ending: At the end of the episode, Pat once again falls over while trying to demonstrate his “dance moves”.
Pat: Maybe I could use some dance lessons.
    //Everyone laughs//
  • Hidden Depths: Turner is shown to have an interest in dancing (and be fairly good at it, too), although he denies this when the other tools ask him about it.
  • I'm Okay!: Pat says this at the beginning of the episode when he falls spectacularly while trying to dance.
  • The Show Must Go On: When Oleg sprains his ankle and is unable to perform, Maria decides to still hold the dance recital with Manny as her replacement dance partner.
  • Slippery Skid: Mr. Lopart slips and falls when he steps on some spilled Tutti-Frutti Candy Sticks and they roll out from under him.
