Rusty’s Little Light Lie

A new movie theater is having its grand opening, and Manny is called to install light bulbs in a theater’s marquee- and Kelly has a big box of bulbs just waiting to be put to use. Unfortunately, while moving the box, Rusty is a bit careless and accidentally breaks the bulbs. Fearing Manny’s disappointment, he lies and says he didn’t do it. But, truth or lies, it doesn’t really matter- Manny still needs to finish the marquee, which means he needs to figure out how to find some working bulbs…

”Rusty’s Little Light Lie” includes:

  • Brick Joke: After being buried in Out Of Control Popcorn in an earlier scene, Mr. Lopart turns up at the movie theater’s grand opening with a gigantic wheeled tub full of said popcorn and offers it to the theater’s patrons.
  • Eating Solves Everything: Mr. Lopart, when buried in Out Of Control Popcorn, claims he’ll eat his way out of the pile.
  • Hard-Work Montage: In addition to the usual “We Work Together” montage, the episode also has a montage of the tools going door-to-door collecting donations of light bulbs to replace the ones Rusty broke.
  • Honesty Aesop: After lying about having accidentally broken a box of bulbs, Rusty learns that it’s better to simply admit you made a mistake than to lie about it and let the mistake cause further problems.
  • Out Of Control Popcorn: This ends up happening to Mr. Lopart when he leaves his store’s popcorn popper unattended to search for a spare light bulb (It Makes Sense in Context).

Squeeze In A Pinch

During what should be a routine repair of Sheet Rock Hills Elementary’s bleachers, an overexcited Squeeze misses a bolt- and pinches Manny’s thumb. Hard. While Manny himself isn’t too badly hurt, Squeeze is horrified by what she’s done and refuses to do any more repair work, for fear that she’ll slip up and hurt him again.

“Squeeze In A Pinch” contains the following tropes:

  • Advanced Tech 2000: Squeeze at one point mentions a kind of “fancy electric pliers” known as the “Ply-O-Matic 3000”.
  • "Be Quiet!" Nudge: Dusty gives one to Felipe after the latter responds to Squeeze’s despondent suggestion that Manny replace her with a Ply-O-Matic 3000 by saying that he likes Ply-O-Matic 3000s.
  • Bread, Eggs, Milk, Squick: At one point, the tools are listing errors they made to convince Squeeze that Mistakes Are Not the End of the World. The mistakes are pretty reasonable at first- Dusty once got overexcited and sawed through an entire table, Rusty broke a pipe and made a toilet shoot water- and then there's Felipe’s.
Felipe: I collapsed a whole water tower!
  • Brick Joke:
    • Coach Johnson’s “coach voice” manifests once after he meets Manny and the tools, and again after the repair has been completed.
    • At the beginning of the episode, it’s mentioned that Pat has apparently broken Manny’s radio twice due to a combination of his general clumsiness and a tendency to dance like crazy to whatever song is playing; at the end, he breaks the radio for the third time.
  • "Everybody Laughs" Ending: Caused by this exchange:
    Manny: Remember, everyone makes mistakes.
    //Offscreen Crash//
Pat: Oops. I think I broke the radio again…
Manny: Some of us just make more mistakes than others.
  • Funny Background Event: Pat is still dancing and singing along to the radio while Manny is talking to Coach Johnson on the phone about the school’s broken bleachers.
  • Gone Horribly Right: Apparently, Manny once fixed an air conditioner too well, making it powerful enough that it made it snow in Kelly’s shop.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: Mr. Lopart’s insistence that his shop’s new sign (which is suspended by rubber bands) is “sturdy as a rock” is immediately disproven when a bird sits on the sign and causes it to sag down nearly to Mr. Lopart’s level.
  • I've Heard of That — What Is It?:
Coach Johnson: My team is looking for a sponsor. Would you be interested?
Pat: Yes! (beat) What’s a sponsor?
  • Mistakes Are Not the End of the World: Squeeze has to learn that making a simple mistake doesn’t make you a bad person after accidentally pinching Manny’s thumb.
  • No Indoor Voice: Coach Johnson has a “coach voice” which is exceedingly loud, and tends to activate on its own without him wanting it to.
  • Noodle Incident:
    • Somehow, Felipe once accidentally caused a water tower to collapse.
    • It’s mentioned at the beginning of the episode that Pat’s wild dancing has led to him destroying Manny’s radio… twice.
    • Apparently, Manny once fixed an air conditioner so much that it became a bit to powerful- by which we mean that the repaired AC made it snow inside Kelly’s store.
  • Offscreen Crash: Pat wrecking Manny’s radio for the third time is presented this way.
  • One-Episode Fear: Squeeze develops a fear of accidentally hurting people (Manny in particular) after missing a bolt and pinching Manny’s thumb, and gets over it after being told that Mistakes Are Not the End of the World (and that Manny’s thumb wasn’t actually hurt that badly).
  • Pun-Based Title: On the phrase “in a pinch” and the idea of pinching something.
  • Scatting: Pat employs this in order to sing along to a song on the radio that doesn’t have lyrics.
Pat: Ba da da da da DA! Ba da da da da DA!
