Written by Allison Craig

Hanazuki is about to take a hike up a mountain with her little critter friends. As soon as they set out, Hanazuki accidentally steps on a cluster of spikes and stumbles back on top of Blue, squishing him like a pancake. Hanazuki thinks he'll be fine since he and his buddies are shapeshifters, but Blue doesn't pop back to his usual shape, and nothing Hanazuki does can fix him. Her friends get an idea and carry him into the woods with Hanazuki in pursuit, receiving another treasure from the flying baby along the way.

Hanazuki finds her friends bouncing on an incredibly lax unicorn named Sleepy Unicorn, who is already familiar with the colorful critters, revealing them to be called Hemkas. Sleepy explains that the Hemkas think he can unflatten little Blue Hemka using the powers of his magical horn. However, Sleepy says that using magic just makes him even sleepier, and tries to resume his nap. Still, Hanazuki is too amazed by the very idea of magic to accept any other answer, and insists he at least make the effort. After failing more than once, Sleepy finally breaks down and admits that he is terrified of magic after witnessing his home being destroyed by it. Magic, he says, should only be used by the "pure of heart", which he says he isn't.

Sleepy's refusal drives Hanazuki away in tears, fearing that Blue may be flat forever. She and the other Hemkas decide to cheer Blue up by climbing the mountain while Sleepy follows in secret. As soon as they reach the top, however, Blue gets blown away by the wind. Turning blue with sadness, Hanazuki tries in vain to cast a magic spell to save Blue. Sleepy, inspired by Hanazuki's resolve, manages to fire a magical beam to restore Blue and conjure up a safety net to drop him onto. Sleepy congratulates Hanazuki, pretending that she helped Blue all by herself, but Hanazuki already knows it was Sleepy who did it and says he may be pure of heart after all. To celebrate being normal again, Blue plants Hanazuki's treasure and grows a blue Treasure Tree.

Tropes:

  • Achilles in His Tent: Although Sleepy gets points for at least trying, Sleepy ultimately refuses to help fix Blue because he's afraid of his own powers. Seeing the powerless Hanazuki try instead is what inspires him to act, however.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Sleepy Unicorn says he came from a moon that was destroyed by magic, and even starts to mention that he did some pretty terrible things with his power, but stops himself before he can go further.
  • Everything Talks: Hanazuki and Hemkas hike up a giant, talking mountain.
  • Magic Feather: Subverted. Sleepy casts a spell that saves and fixes Blue while Hanazuki is too concentrating on using magic herself. He then tries making her think she was the one who cast the spell, but falls asleep before he can manage. And even then, Hanazuki realized it anyway.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Hanazuki says this when she accidentally gets Blue Hemka blown off the mountain, bringing him there to cheer him up after she squished him.
  • Plucky Girl: Despite her sadness and guilt over flattening Blue and putting him in danger, Hanazuki continues to try and make the best of it, which ends up inspiring Sleepy.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Sleepy insists that magic should only be used by the "pure of heart", which he says he's not. After he saves Blue using magic, Hanazuki says he may be pure of heart after all.
