Recap / Hamster & Gretel S1E24 "A Mammoth Problem"

Go To

Gretel enters the science fair with a baking soda volcano, but is taunted by a snooty student named Nordle that his science project is way more impressive. Pressured, Gretel replaces her baking soda volcano with an ancient iceberg. Unfortunately, during a freak accident by Nordle's project, the ice melts and sets a rampaging mammoth loose.

Tropes:

  • Artistic License – Biology: Apparently, mammoths don't mind eating a hamburger.
  • Brick Joke: Early on in the episode, Nordle commands for Gretel not to use his catchphrase "Let's make some fusion", but Gretel says it anyway and Nordle tells her that she'll be hearing from his agent. Near the end of the episode, the agent arrives to tell Gretel that she’s going to be sued for copyright infringement until Nordle says it's okay.
  • Bruce Wayne Held Hostage: Gretel can't use her superpowers to stop the mammoth because Nordle insists on coming along, since part of his project is entangled on the mammoth.
  • The Bus Came Back: This is Professor Exclamation's first appearance in the actual show since the very first episode (Chibi Tiny Tales notwithstanding). He turns out to be Nordle's father.
  • Cruel Elephant: A giant woolly mammoth is set free from an iceberg and rampages through the city.
  • Dark Horse Victory: Gretel and Nordle end up presenting a joint project, so both of them win, right? Wrong: Bailey gets first prize instead.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: After teaming up and calming down the mammoth (turning it in their joint project), Gretel and Nordle become friends. This may be problematic, considering that Nordle’s father is Professor Exclamation.
  • Human Popsicle: When the iceberg is thawed by Nordle's laser, it releases a frozen live mammoth inside.
  • Out of Focus: Kevin only appears in the beginning to help carry Gretel's volcano, then returns to class and has no part in the plot after that. Likewise, Hamster is absent for the first half of the episode, and when Gretel tries to call him for help, he's too busy doing aerobics to answer until later.
  • Second Place Is for Losers: Nordle's father taught him that school is all about winning, and demands that he get first place in the science fair. He ends up tying with Gretel, but by then he had learned that winning isn't as important as learning and having fun.
  • Science Fair: The episode takes place during the school's science fair. Gretel presents a baking soda volcano... as do 35 other students (one of whom is still working on his). Needled by Nordle, who is presenting a fusion engine, she replaces it with an iceberg (the exact opposite of a volcano, according to her). Unfortunately, an accident with Nordle's project unleashes a woolly mammoth trapped inside.
  • We Need a Distraction: Gretel asks Bailey to keep the fair judges busy by presenting her project about flat fish. They are so impressed by her presentation that they award Bailey first prize.
  • Weaponized Animal: Nordle's laser gets entangled on the mammoth's tusk, making it twice as dangerous.
