Recap / Hamster & Gretel S1E08 "La Ballad of La Cebolla"

Go To

Kevin and Gretel meet La Cebolla, a former telenovela star who was bestowed with the superpower to talk to onions, which in turn will understand and listen to her. The two don't really take her and her crimes seriously, until La Cebolla kidnaps Gretel to use her superpowers as fuel to talk to onions all over the world.

Tropes:

  • Be Careful What You Say: La Cebolla plans to tell every onion to crush themselves so that the entire world will drown in their own tears. Gretel and Kevin note how inconsiderate this seems to the onions, with La Cebolla elaborating that she doesn't care for the onions at all. This causes the onions to no longer obey her and leave.
  • Ignored Epiphany: Kevin begins to draw a connection from La Cebolla describing her powers being granted by a light from the sky and how Gretel was empowered. Gretel dismisses it because La Cebolla's power is ridiculous, which Kevin concedes.
  • Incredibly Long Note: As La Cebolla departs the grocery store, she holds the last note of her Villain Song for an improbably long amount of time, and it can still be heard as Kevin and Gretel talk afterwards.
    • Later, when La Cebolla reappears to capture Gretel, she's holding it again, creating the implication that she was holding it since her last scene.
  • Onion Tears: La Cebolla was taken out of the telenovela she starred in because of her incapacity to cry on cue, so she tried about 75 or 80 types of onion themed remedies on herself without success. Her ultimate plan as a supervillain also involves taking control of all the onions in the world and let them crush themselves in order for the whole world to drown in their own tears.
  • Superstition Episode: Downplayed. No cases of bad luck actually happen in the episode per se, but Carolina is incredibly insistent on using elaborate methods to ward off bad luck or cure certain annoyances like the hiccups.
  • Troll: Hamster gets Kevin to yell one of his own secrets for the "apple water" cure, only to confess that the water was enough to help him, much to Kevin's annoyance.
  • Villain Song: La Cebolla introduces herself and her backstory via song.
  • Wham Shot: The episode ends with the alien ship from the first two episodes in the sky overlooking La Cebolla's arrest.
  • What Kind of Lame Power Is Heart, Anyway?: After learning what La Cebolla can do, Gretel and Kevin immediately laugh it off, elaborating that talking to onions isn't special at all. Even after clarifying that the onions are able to do whatever she tells them to, the two aren't all too impressed. Even the aliens that bestowed her with these powers realize that it's kind of a lame superpower.
