Recap / Half Life Forget About Freeman

Go To

"Forget about Freeman! We are cutting our losses and pulling out! Anyone left down there now is on his own! Repeat, if you weren't already, you are now... "
HECU commander, on the radio, as the chapter begins.
Back in an underground part of Black Mesa, Gordon discovers that the HECU are losing the battle against Xen, which the soldiers begin their retreat from Black Mesa. Behind the scenes elsewhere, Black Operatives are taking over the operation to eliminate anyone, including remaining HECU troops. Meanwhile, Gordon battles fiercely through alien resistance and stranded HECU troops to reach the Lambda complex.

This Chapter contains examples of:

  • Absurdly Spacious Sewer: One of these is traversed on the way to Lambda Core.

  • Curse Cut Short: The evacuation call may have been attempting to proclaim "If you aren't already, you are now fucked!"
  • Descending Ceiling: Caused at the start of the chapter due to the surface bombing causing a cave-in where the ceiling falls chunk by chunk.
  • Optional Party Member: There's a surviving security guard near the start of the level that can help Gordon traverse the first map that has all the snark nests. They're forced to split at the sewer entrance that leads to the level's second map.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: The entire H.E.C.U., after suffering heavy losses, just decide to give up and retreat, outright giving the chapter's eponymous order to leave Freeman be and run for their lives. As Opposing Force reveals, there's a nuclear reason for that.
  • Sentry Gun: After the Descending Ceiling room, one of these can be activated to help kill enemies.
  • Sidetrack Bonus: There's a whole section in the level's first map that's completely optional. Particularly, the whole left area that's littered with snark nests. You only have to go right towards a sewer hatch that leads to the level's next map section.
  • Tank Goodness: You need to fire an Abrams cannon to open the way forward to the Lambda Core.
  • Title Drop: The military radio broadcast heard at the beginning of "Forget About Freeman" starts with those exact words.
  • Unique Enemy: The ceiling-mounted sentry gun mentioned above is the only one of its kind to be found in the game (outside of "Hazard Course", which only attacks you if you attack any fellow employees).
