"Time heals all wounds"

Aired: November 20, 2006

Sniffles uses a time machine to help his fellow Happy Tree Friends on the playground.

"Blast From the Past" contains examples of:

  • 360-Degree Swing Set Swing: When Giggles is bounced from the swing to the net and back to the swing, she makes several 360-degree spins around the bar and ends up crushed by the chain.
  • And I Must Scream: Sniffles unwittingly traps himself in a time loop by accidentally taking the place of his past self (by crushing him with his time machine), allowing Lumpy to drag him off to the playground once more.
  • Asshole Victim: A prehistoric ant is eaten by Sniffles and another by his prehistoric self. After what the main ant family painfully put him through, they totally deserved it.
  • Butt-Monkey: Of the four character's repeating deaths, Giggles has the worse out of all of them.
  • Cosmic Plaything: Exaggerated. If there was ever an episode that showed just how truly unlucky and ill-fated the Tree Friends are, this is it.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • When Sniffles time travels back in time in the beginning of the episode you can see a patch of blood under his time machine. It's actually future Sniffles.
    • Sniffles chopping down the tree and piloting the plane eventually led to Giggles, Toothy, and Cuddles' death.
  • For Want Of A Nail: Sniffles inadvertently causes the deaths of Toothy, Giggles, Cuddles, and his future self all because he accidentally spilt the milk he was gonna use for his cookies.
  • Karmic Death: As mentioned above, two prehistoric ants are eaten by Sniffles and his prehistoric self respectively. They really had it coming to them.
  • Literally Shattered Lives: One of Cuddles' deaths is from being launched into space and freezing, then being shattered by a passing satellite.
  • Mundane Utility: The reason Sniffles invents the time machine at all is because he accidentally spilt the milk he was gonna use for his cookies.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: In the original timeline, the only injury that was sustained at the playground was Toothy hurting his arm going down the slide. However, because of Sniffles' attempts to fix the past repeatedly resulting in death, what we ultimately get once Sniffles assumes he fixed everything is... well, a tale we've seen before.
  • Once More, with Clarity: As it happens, Sniffles was the one responsible for the events of Spin Fun Knowin' Ya: In his efforts to out and out remove the playground wholesale as to prevent his friends from getting hurt, he unknowingly left behind the merry-go-round itself, the stump of a tree, and the airplane he used in a previous loop.
  • Prequel: This episode takes place before the events of the first internet episode in the series and the events after it.
  • Shout-Out: The time-travelling DeLorean makes an appearance. Also, some of Lumpy's lines are somewhat reminiscent of Doc Brown.
  • Stable Time Loop: Sniffles accidentally kills his future self while future Lumpy comes in and asks Sniffles for help, thus kickstarting the entire episode again and will continue over and over.
  • Synchronous Episodes: It's the first episode in the series from Sniffles' point of view.
  • Time Travel: Sniffles creates a time machine in this episode out of a dryer.
  • They Killed Kenny Again: Lumpy, Giggles, Cuddles, Toothy, and (future) Sniffles die in this episode.
    • Lampshaded by Cuddles when he says "Oh my God, I'm gonna die! Not this old death again!"
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: However, Lumpy is brought back to life thanks to Sniffles' time machine, while Sniffles' past self gets to live. Sniffles also finally gets to kill one of the ants and his prehistoric self eats another for good measure.
  • Wham Shot: After Sniffles strips the playground bare, and heads back home, Lumpy and the others arrive, and are dismayed to see the playground is gone. But then, Lumpy discovers something behind the bushes that Sniffles missed. Specifically, a merry-go-round.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Thanks to his efforts to prevent a relatively minor accident, Sniffles accidentally causes three much more horrific deaths and — it's possible — every death in the series. Yikes.
