In the morning, glad, I see my foe outstretched beneath a tree.

Nick, Hank and Wu search the woods for a tree-like Wesen dedicated to protecting Mother Nature, while Capt. Renard seeks insight into Diana's drawings. Nick, Hank, Wu, and Monroe try something drastic to lure the woodland Wesen out. What will happen when they face the creature?

This episode provides examples of:

  • Alien Abduction: Discussed when Nick, Hank and Wu discuss the disappearances; cars left abandoned with no signs of either suicide or leaving intentionally. Hank compares it to aliens, but the gang isn't ready to go there yet.
  • And I Must Scream: The apparent fate of the Kenoshimobe and Jubokko's victims, as their faces appear in the Jubokko's bark, still screaming.
  • Asshole Victim: The first victim was poaching, and the second was dumping toxic waste in the forest. Both of them had a record of similar crimes. Monroe even suggests they leave the tree creatures to do what they're doing. Averted with Rosalee, who is targeted after her car is damaged and starts leaking oil.
  • Blood Magic: When Eve, Monroe and Rosalee examine the hand mirror, Eve's dried blood still covers the surface. When they turn it over, however, the blood starts dripping. They hastily lock the mirror back up.
  • Call-Back:
    • The gang are trying to find out what attacked Eve through the mirror. Until they have more information, they decide to cover all their mirrors and implement a buddy system.
    • Nick's super-hearing makes another appearance as he uses it to track Rosalee, who is being chased by the Kinoshimobe through the forst.
  • Call-Forward: Diana says the monster that attacked Eve is from "another place." When Monroe wonders about it, Eve speculates that the only way to know is to go there.
  • Gaia's Vengeance: The Kenoshimobe takes people who commit ecological crimes and feeds them to the Jubokko, a tree for which it acts as a guardian.
  • No-Sell: The Kenoshimobe is not impressed by Nick being a Grimm. Its response is to hit him in the face with a liana.
  • Psychic Powers: When Diana walks in on the gang's conversation about the mirror monster, she says it's not a dream, but she doesn't know what to call it; it's not real yet.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Spot the Thread: Ralph's story about his friend being stabbed with vines and carried away by a tree monster sounds crazy until the blood on his jacket is analyzed. Also there is a huge amount of chlorophyll... as if a plant also bled on his shirt.
  • "X" Marks the Spot: Inverted. The gang find the Jubokko by marking off all the disappearances, which form a circle around the tree's location.
