Nick and Meisner: Back-to-Back Badasses

Rats! They fought the dogs, and killed the cats.

Nick and Hank are called to a local dump after some Wesen have a deadly encounter with the mythical Rat King.

Trubel turns up in critical condition, and Meisner makes contact looking for her.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Arbitrary Skepticism: Monroe dismisses the idea of the Rat King being real. Though this may be wishful thinking as much as anything.
  • Asshole Victim: All three victims were Klaustreiche who were killed in revenge for beating a Reinegen to death for fun.
  • Back-to-Back Badasses: Nick and Meisner, during their Big Damn Heroes moment when they rescue Trubel from the hospital.
  • Cool Bike: The motorbike Trubel crashed in the previous episode turns out to have several exciting features. Nick decides to stop playing with it after some button-pressing results in an explosion.
  • Feuding Families: Klaustreiche and Reinegen, in the same vein as Blutbaden and Bauerschwein. Makes sense, as it's basically cats and rats. Apparently "Saturday night down at the dump" is a common pastime for Klaustreiche who enjoy beating up Reinegen.
  • Forced to Watch: The Reinegen abduct Johnny and Selina, and make Selina watch while they kill Johnny.
  • Foreshadowing: Renard is reluctant to offer support for a political candidate, until he's offered the post of Police Chief. So Renard will cheerfully compromise his principles for power? Surely that won't come up later...
  • Fusion Dance: A Rat King is formed when multiple Reinegen merge into one giant rat.
  • Internal Reveal: Meisner calls the phone Nick took from Agent Chavez, hoping to reach Nick and find out if Trubel is with him. He gets Adalind instead, both of them recognising each other's voices.
  • Lured into a Trap: Nick stops the Rat King by getting Selina to woge, luring it onto power lines and zapping the Reinegen forming it apart again.
  • Medical Horror: Trubel's nurse is a Wesen, who seems to belong to Black Claw and suspects that Trubel's a Grimm. Once she's confirmed this, she and a doctor sneak Trubel away somewhere, claiming she's going for surgery.
  • Misplaced Retribution: The Reinegen decide that Selina deserves to die for harbouring Johnny, who escaped Reinegen justice at the beginning.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown:
    • Trubel is badly beaten for reasons unknown and passes out in Nick's arms, so he takes her straight to the hospital.
    • The Reinegen attacked in the beginning dies of his wounds.
  • Shout-Out: Selina is a Klaustreich, in other words a cat woman whose name is Selina.
  • Urban Legends: The Rat King is an urban legend in the Wesen community, where when a group of Reinegen are threatened they can come together to form a giant rat. No one's happy to discover that it's true.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Hank still doesn't like rats.
  • Women Are Wiser: Selina, the first female Klaustreich the characters get to know, seems much nicer than any of the males.
  • You Killed My Son: The Reinegen who was beaten to death in the beginning was the Reinegen prince, leading the king to demand revenge.
