Rites of passage get out of hand.

She looked in the window, and then peeped through the keyhole; seeing nobody in the house, she lifted the latch.

A young couple get more than they bargained for when they invade the home of a wealthy family for a little fun. The occupants are a family of bear-like Wesen called Jägerbars, and the son of the family is ready for a rite of passage involving a hunt. Guess who just signed up to be the prey?

After an attempt on her life, Nick stresses about leaving Aunt Marie alone in the hospital and asks Monroe to watch over her.

This episode provides examples of:

  • An Arm and a Leg: Monroe ends up ripping off one of Marie's would-be assailants' arm off.
  • Bad Habits: One of the assassins who tries to murder Aunt Marie is dressed like a priest.
  • Bizarre Sexual Dimorphism: Female Jägerbars look even more bear-like and animalistic than their male counterparts, even moreso than most Wesen.
  • Deadlier Than The Male: The mother Jägerbar (a literal Mama Bear) masterminds the ritual hunt without her husband's knowledge (he thinks they've left such savage traditions behind), and tries to kill Nick in the end.
  • Died in Your Arms Tonight: Aunt Marie dies in Nick's arms after defeating the assassins who came to kill her.
  • The Dreaded: Marie Kessler is infamous among Monroe's family.
Monroe: Aunt Marie, right? Yeah, I couldn't sleep the last two nights thinking old aunt Marie was going to cut off my head and stick it on a lamppost. That's how my great-grandma ended up, you know!
  • Dying Moment of Awesome: Aunt Marie takes out her assassin before dying.
  • Enemy Mine: While Nick goes to handle the Jägerbar case, he sends Monroe to watch over Aunt Marie. Monroe is not pleased about having to watch over a Grimm whose job is killing people like him.
  • Everyone Has Standards: The father Jägerbar is horrified when he learns his wife has been encouraging their son to participate in the rite of passage hunt, and agrees to help Nick stop them before they kill the couple they kidnapped.
  • Everything's Worse with Bears: Getting caught in the act of a home invasion is one thing, but when the homeowners are bears, you're screwed.
  • Fairytale Motifs: Goldilocks and the Three Bears. The girl in the couple who break into the Jägerbars'note  house is a blonde woman named Gilda.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: The mother Jägerbar meets her end when charging at Nick... only to fall into a spike pit trap she and her son had set up for his "hunt".
  • Hunting the Most Dangerous Game: The Jägerbar rite of passage is to hunt human prey.
