Next time send your best

'Wait!' the troll said, jumping in front of him. 'This is my toll bridge. You have to pay a penny to cross.'

As Nick delves into the trailer's weapons cabinet and his inner Grimm, the investigation of a dead construction worker leads him into a long-standing conflict in the Wesen world.

But that's not all, as two Reapers are dispatched to kill Nick. With assassins on his tail and witnesses in need of protection, Nick will have to go on the offensive.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Assassin Outclassin': Nick is attacked by two Reapers and wins. Monroe is astounded when he sees the bodies.
  • Badass Boast: After killing the two Reapers sent to kill him, Nick realises that they'll just keep coming and his best chance is to "send a message." He does this by sending their heads back to their employer with a note that says, "Next time, send your best."
  • Chekhov's Gun: Nick takes some Grimm weapons into the woods to practice with them, including a huge studded club and a special double-crossbow designed for use against Blutbaden (Monroe is indignant for half a second before admitting that it's cool). He uses both weapons later against the Reapers.
  • Collateral Damage: When Nick fights the two Reapers, one of them manages to kill his own friend when Nick ducks out of the way.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: The three Eisbibers - Arnold, John and Bud - prove themselves remarkably courageous, despite clearly being scared of the Hasslich (and having good reason to be).
  • Deadly Euphemism: After killing the Reapers, Nick stops by the cells to visit Butrell. He asks if Butrell is surprised to see him and explaining that "I met your friends." When Butrell asks how that went, Nick tells him that they got angry and "kinda lost their heads."
  • Dirty Coward: After the Eisbibers vote for Arnold not to come forward, Bud says that he saw them through Nick's eyes and, for the first time, was ashamed of his species.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: When Nick and Monroe discuss Juliette inviting Monroe over for dinner, their discussion of the Masquerade sounds as if they're talking about hiding an affair.
Nick: Monroe, name one aspect of our relationship that we wouldn't have to lie about.
Monroe: You're right. All the time we spend together, all the sneaking around. God, it suddenly seems so wrong.
  • Fairytale Motifs: Three Billy Goats Gruff.
  • Leave No Witnesses: Arnold, the only witness to the murder, correctly fears that the Hasslich will kill him if they find him and goes into hiding.
  • Noodle Incident: When explaining to Monroe why he wants to learn to use the weapons from the trailer, Nick mentions having used pepper spray on a student who turned out to be a Skalengeck. Monroe comments that the Skalengeck probably enjoyed it.
  • Stating the Simple Solution: When Bud has to find the witness for Nick, he attempts to come up with a convoluted method of secretly transmitting the information to Nick in code, only for Nick to point out that Bud can just phone him.
Bud: Okay. Okay, if Arnold's hiding, I might know where. If I'm right, I'll come to your house and carve a small series of numbers on the porch steps. The odd numbers will mean that...
    Nick: Or just call me.
Bud: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, that would work too.
