Recap / Greatest Freakout Ever 20

Go To

The Quire family is on a vacation in the Bahamas, and are spending part of their day on a sightseeing tour in a boat. Stephen continuously complains about assorted annoyances, like not being allowed to catch fish and the choice of music being played, and starts escalating the conflict with the boat captain. When Stephen refuses to back down, the captain shoves him into the water.

Tropes

  • Ask a Stupid Question...: The boat captain tells Stephen to start behaving or leave the boat. As they're in the middle of a tour and not near land, Stephen asks how he could leave the boat right now. The captain pushes him into the water to demonstrate.
  • Call-Back: As was established in episode fourteen, Stephen can't swim.
  • Is That a Threat?: After Stephen repeatedly acts up and refuses to calm down, the boat captain points out that there are no police around, which Stephen takes as a threat (the actual intent of the statement seemed to be more along the lines of the boat captain being the ultimate authority of what happens on his boat and Stephen needing to listen to him).
  • Outside-Context Problem: Like the police officer in episode eleven, the boat captain isn't part of the immediate universe surrounding Stephen and isn't going to play along with his bad behavior the way the Quire family does. He expects his authority to be respected at all times while on his boat, and when Stephen refuses to back down, he's just going to toss him in the water. Stephen isn't even acting as badly as he does in most episodes of the series.
  • Pet the Dog: The on-camera relationship between Stephen and David is almost always completely antagonist, with the two of them arguing constantly, David repeatedly threatening to kick his ass, Stephen having no respect for his father, and David having no sympathy for Stephen's genuine anger issues. When the boat captain pushes Stephen overboard, however, David immediately jumps in after him, knowing that his son can't swim and is in actual danger.
