Recap / Great News S 2 E 02 Squad Feud

Go To

Diana, who is now mentoring Katie, convinces her that she must be more assertive about what she wants. When she demands that Greg give her more of a say in the news pieces that they do, he rejects her request. Frustrated, she insists that Greg's job (Executive Producer) is easy, and he lets her executive produce the show for the day to show her how difficult it is.

Meanwhile, Diana and Portia participate in a forum for female CEOs, and after insulting Portia, she starts a "squad feud" with Diana; and Carol, after finding out that Katie and Greg almost kissed, attempts to meddle and push them closer together.

This episode premiered on October 5, 2017.

Tropes appearing in this episode:

  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: Between Carol and Dave initially, according to her. She seems to believe this is the case with Katie and Greg.
  • The Bet: Katie and Greg's fight about who's job is harder naturally leads to one involving a job-swap
  • Genius Ditz: Portia can develop immensely successful business ideas, and just a few minutes later struggle to spell "a apple".
  • Graceful Loser: Greg, after losing his bet with Katie.
  • Hidden Depths: Portia shows her business-savviness to Diana when pitching her plan to monetize their squad feud, proving exactly why she was invited to the female CEO forum.
  • Humble Pie: Katie serves one to Greg after successfully executive producing the show; unfortunately, her success leads to Diana giving her the job permanently. Luckily, she stands up to Diana and says she doesn't want it without Greg ever finding out. Towards the end, both humbly admit to each other that their respective jobs are a lot harder than they seem.
  • Noodle Incident: How Carol and Dave got together. Apparently it involved Carol pretending to be a lawyer (after a fight with Dave, which led to them switching jobs for a day), and getting somehow getting a jaywalker sent to Supermax. Dave got him out... after 7 years.
  • Role Swap Plot/Swapped Roles: Katie and Greg, who swap jobs at Greg's insistence, when Katie claims his job isn't that difficult. Katie manages to do everything successfully, so Diana lets her have the job permanently. She discovers that Greg's job is pretty difficult; from putting out fires, to dealing with Chuck and Portia's various neuroses, and Greg realizes that Katie's job isn't so easy when you have to do a story you don't want to do, after Katie assigns him a story about "STDs in Nursing Homes".
    • According to Carol, this is also how she and Katie's father fell in love.
  • Running Gag: Carol seemingly mentioning famous Will They or Won't They? Sitcom couples, only to subvert it by actually meaning certain real-life couples (or in one case, a fish recipe).
  • Shipper on Deck: Carol, towards Katie and Greg, after hearing that they almost kissed.
  • Shout-Out: An unusual variant. Carol mentions a few "Will They or Won't They?" senarios between "Jim & Pam" from Dave's office, "Ross & Rachel" from her gym, and "Salmon Diane", the "classic fish recipe".
Carol: Look at these two. Just like Salmon Diane.
Beth: From Cheers, the classic 80's alcoholism PSA?
Carol: No, the classic fish recipe. Just salmon and nacho cheese; you wouldn't think they would go together, and in many ways they do not—
  • Take That!: To Cheers. See Beth's quote above.
  • Too Much Information: Hilariously subverted by Carol; her definition of "TMI" is "Tell Mommy Everything".
  • Unsportsmanlike Gloating: Katie does this to Greg after proving she can do his job better than he can.
  • Will They or Won't They?: Invoked by Carol, who insists that Katie and Greg have one between them.
