Tropes

  • Almost Kiss: At least twice, it looked like Bruce was going to kiss Selina: the first time, he was leaning over her to open the car door, and the second time, he was pinning her to the ground to stop her from shooting Jerome. In the first instance, Selina looked like she wanted him to kiss her.
  • Asshole Victim: When Jerome was a child, his uncle shoved his hand into a pot of hot chicken broth for stealing a cookie, and in the present, poured boiling soup down his throat.
  • Big Damn Hero: Or Heroine! Selina stops Jerome from shooting Bruce, using her whip and the snarky line:
Selina: Still don't need my help, Bruce?
  • The Chosen One: Remember that glowing light Ra's passed into Barbara? It's the mark of the Demon's Head, signifying her as his chosen heir to assume command of the League of Shadows, which is apparently why he saved her in the first place.
  • Crocodile Tears: Bruce pretends to cry to distract Detective Harper and buy Selina time to get out of sight.
  • Fingore: Jim shoots Tetch in the hand to get him to stop the mass jump.
  • Honor Before Reason: Bruce is getting choked to death by a strongman. Jerome decides to shoot the strongman to save Bruce. Bruce stops Jerome from rescuing him because he doesn't want any more killing. So Jerome gleefully allows the strongman to continue strangling Bruce to death.
  • Hypno Fool: You can't really hypnotize a person into committing suicide, assuming they didn't already have inclinations. Much less can you do so to thousands of people over the radio. Tetch's abilities approach Compelling Voice.
  • Kneel Before Zod: Barbara demands the obedience of the League of Shadows.
  • Loophole Abuse: Jervis hypnotizes multiple civilians via radio to stand at the ledge of buildings and walk off at the stroke of midnight. To ensure Gordon's failure, he adds to the suggestion that any order to get to safety will trigger them jumping off. Jim finds a way out: tell the jumpers to save each other.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: If Bruce hadn't interfered, Jerome would have been killed by his uncle, cutting short whatever plans he has in place.
    • Again later, when he stops Selina from shooting Jerome, allowing Jerome to escape.
  • Noodle Incident: Some time between his last appearance and now Johnathan Crane was apparently tracked down and thrown into Arkham. With a new actor to boot.
  • Only Sane Man: Nothing speaks more to how nuts Jervis and Crane are than the fact that Jerome is the voice of reason in the group.
  • Out-Gambitted: Jerome's uncle sees his attempt on his life coming, and sets a trap.
  • Pay Evil unto Evil: Jerome shooting his abusive uncle.
  • Save the Villain: Bruce saves Jerome from being killed by his uncle.
  • Stealth Hi/Bye: Bruce pulls this on Harper after he and Selina find what they're looking for at the GCPD.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Barbara gives a marvelous one to the more misogynistic members of the League of Shadows, calling them weak for refusing to embrace change. They must have taken the speech to heart as they all bow to her, but were killed afterwards anyway (at least the males) due to being unfit.
  • Thou Shall Not Kill: Bruce refuses to let Selina kill Jerome.
  • Villain Respect: Scarecrow and Tetch seem to have this for each other as they refer to each other as "Mr. Crane" and "Mr. Tetch" respectively .
  • Villain Team-Up: Jerome Valeska, Jervis Tetch, and Jonathan Crane team up to escape Arkham and wreak havoc.
  • Villainous Rescue: Possibly out of some slight appreciation for Bruce standing up for him (after no one else in his childhood ever did), Jerome almost shoots the strongman who is whaling on Bruce. Bruce, not wanting any more killing, tells him to stop.
  • Why Don't You Just Shoot Him?: Selina attempts this on Jerome. Sadly she is unsuccessful.
  • Xanatos Gambit: While Jervis and the others would have no doubt enjoyed his mass murder plan succeeding, it was ultimately just a means to divert the police from Jerome's and Crane's own plans.
