Directed by Nick Copus

Written by Robert Hull & Megan Mostyn Brown

Nygma institutes his scheme to bring down Jim Gordon before he has the chance to look into Miss Kringle's disappearance, successfully framing him for the murder of another cop. Bruce begins his sojourn living on the streets of Gotham; when he and Selina attempt to rob some crooks, things go wrong when they are captured and Bruce is beaten, but they escape with the money. The Penguin's reunion with Butch ends in his humiliation, but then he has a chance encounter at his mother's grave and meets his father for the first time.

Tropes in this episode:

  • The Bad Guy Wins: Score one for Nygma.
  • Brief Accent Imitation: In an attempt to provoke Cobblepot, Tabitha Galavan does an eerily accurate impression of Gertrud.
  • The Bus Came Back: Ivy reappears after being absent for most of the season.
  • Caper Rationalization: Bruce initially balks at the idea of Selina stealing money (which, living on the street, she has to do to survive), but then decides that he doesn't have a problem stealing from criminals and volunteers to take part.
  • The Chessmaster: Ed Nygma is truly demonstrating that his version of the Riddler will be one without compare (well, until later) as he brilliantly frames Gordon for murder.
  • Frame-Up: Nygma's plan to bring down Gordon before Gordon finds out what really happened to Kristin.
  • Late-Arrival Spoiler: Thanks to the episode summary for the next episode, "Prisoners", many fans knew that Nygma's gambit against Gordon would be successful.
  • Luke, You Are My Father: Penguin meets his father for the first time in his life.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: If Gordon hadn't figured out the clues at the gallery, played the hero at the train station (and thus left his prints on the crowbar), and checked out a lead on his own without having his partner along, Nygma's plan wouldn't have worked.
  • Not Worth Killing: Butch decides that he can't kill Penguin, now that Strange made him such a pathetic doormat.
  • Time Skip: The episode completely skips over Gordon's trial to the conviction.
  • Unwitting Pawn: Nygma plays everyone like a fiddle.
  • Wham Episode: Not only is Gordon suspected of killing Galavan again, he is also framed for murdering a fellow police officer by Nygma, and gets sent to prison at the end.
  • Xanatos Gambit: Nygma seems disappointed that the bomb at the train station doesn't take out Gordon, but then the end of the episode reveals that if it had, it would have merely been a bonus: the situation had been set up to get Gordon's fingerprints on a convenient crowbar in order to frame him for the later murder.
