Go To

The team races to find a way to save Turner from radiation poisoning. Brody stumbles on the truth about his father. Harvey confronts his inner demons.

Tropes:

  • All Girls Want Bad Boys: Gender-Inverted Trope, as straitlaced Turner (adopted son of Batman) falls for Duela, the wild and hard-edged daughter of the Joker, saying that he's attracted by how she's herself no matter what.
  • Ambiguous Situation: It's unclear if Rebecca planned on using electrum to revive their son all along, or whether Lincoln did it behind his wife's back.
  • Battle in the Center of the Mind: Harvey fights his Split Personality in their Mental World.
  • Evil All Along: Rebecca March is revealed to be associated with the Court of Owls, just like her husband, and to be his superior.
  • Found Family: Cullen tells Harper that he considers the Knights this and argues the Row siblings should stay in Gotham even after clearing their names because they've never been part of a positive family unit before. Turner also references it when talking with Duela at the end of the episode, though he calls it a "twisted" family.
  • Frame-Up: Harvey's alternate personality warns him that the Court has been trying to make him think he's responsible for the mayor and Cressida's deaths by using a trigger to bring his other self out so that he'll lose time and planting evidence to implicate him.
  • He Knows Too Much: Once Brody tells his mother about his father's activities, she stabs him so he won't bring the evidence to Stephanie.
  • Internal Reveal:
    • Brody finds out his dad is the (supposed) leader of the Court of Owls.
    • Carrie reveals to her mother that she is Robin and associated with the Gotham Knights.
    • Carrie tells Turner that she was the one who removed pages from Bruce's journal and that they talked about a secret he was keeping from him.
    • Rebecca and Lincoln learn that Stephanie is investigating the Court.
  • Irony:
    • Following on from last episode, where Harper became discouraged about any potential romance with Stephanie after seeing her talking intimately with Turner, she acts cold towards Steph and tells Cullen she's decided to take his advice and not waste time pursuing straight girls. Later in the episode, Stephanie and Turner do kiss, but Stephanie pulls away and tells him that she didn't get any spark from him, or from Brody either, indicating she may not be straight after all.
    • Bad Harvey argues that he was doing Harvey a favor by sleeping with Rebecca March because he knows Harvey's never gotten over her, not suspecting that Rebecca is a/the leader of the Court of Owls and therefore not only his enemy but quite possibly the architect of the frame job he's warning Harvey about.
  • Lady Macbeth: Rebecca is not only in the Court like her husband, but is actually the more assertive and aggressive of the two.
  • Making Love in All the Wrong Places: It's strongly implied Turner and Duela have sex while at the library between the book shelves.
  • Offing the Offspring: Rebecca stabs Brody to stop him from exposing the Court. Subverted in that Brody wakes up at the end of the episode, no doubt because the Court now has electrum.
  • Patricide: Harvey learns that his Split Personality was responsible for the death of his father.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Angry that she hid the truth from him, Turner gives one to Carrie about how she's just like Bruce and fights solo because she doesn't respect anyone enough to let them in.
  • Relationship Upgrade: After spending most of the season with growing Ship Tease, Turner and Duela hook up at the end of the episode.
  • Saying Too Much: Brody reveals to his mom that he talked to Stephanie about his dad's owl mask and video of killing Cressida Clarke, not realizing Rebecca is part of the Court. Rebecca later tells Lincoln that Stephanie will have to be dealt with.
  • Ship Sinking: During a tender moment while facing Turner's pending death, he and Stephanie kiss. However, she makes it clear that she doesn't feel any romantic sparks from it.
  • Split-Personality Takeover: Harvey's other self wants him to let him do this, arguing that he needs to be ruthless to take down the Court of Owls.
  • The Tape Knew You Would Say That: Harvey's alternate self anticipated his exact reactions to the video he left for him.
  • Wham Line:
Rebecca: Your father's not the one people should fear. I am.
