Recap / Goosebumps (1995) S3E1 "Shocker on Shock Street"

Go To

Based on A Shocker on Shock Street, book #35 of the original Goosebumps series.

Erin and Marty love horror movies, especially the Shock Street film series. And they're very excited to test out a theme park based on the films. But things take a scary turn when it seems that the monsters in the park are real...

The episode provides examples of:

  • Adaptational Alternate Ending: The book ends with Erin and Marty revealed to be robots that were meant to test out the horror theme park, who end up being shut down when the staff believes they might be malfunctioning due to their odd behavior. The TV Version adds in an extra scene where they reactivate by themselves and get revenge on their creator, who was in the middle of building their replacements; their justification being their belief that robots have as much right to live as humans do.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: Mr. Wright. While he deactivated the robot children in the book, he made it clear he was going to repair them so they could finish testing the park later. Here, he intends to replace them with newer models, leading to the Karmic Twist Ending.
  • Adaptation Title Change: The "A" at the start of the book's title is left out here.
  • Adapted Out:
    • The giant praying mantises from the book are absent, probably because they didn't have the budget.
    • Linda the tour guide does not appear; nor does park director Russ Denver.
  • Ambiguous Robots: Mr. Wright has four identical female scientists as his assistants. Their movement is unnaturally stiff and synchronized, implying they could be robots themselves.
  • Bowdlerization: The UK version of the episode completely censors out the rest of the ending just after Mr. Wright's Big "NO!".
  • Forbidden Zone: Erin and her friend Marty are being guided around her father's animatronics workshop when she asks him about a particular room. He very expressly forbids them from ever entering that room. It's because he built Erin and Marty there and was trying to prevent them from realizing that they were robots.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • Mr. Wright gets very confused when Erin asks about her mother. He never programmed the robot to think about that.
    • He also gets very angry when Erin and Marty nearly walk into a room where he builds the androids.
  • Karmic Twist Ending: The episode with the protagonists, revealed as robots, preparing to exact brutal revenge on their "father" for trying to discard them. The original book had a Cruel Twist Ending, with the two robots having their memories wiped and forced to relive their horrifying experience all over again.
  • Mythology Gag: In the costume room the kids are exploring in the opening scene, there are numerous costumes from other Goosebumps works, including both Haunted Masks and other members of The Unloved, as well as a Creep mask (Erin's dad calls the latter "The Toadinator").
  • Turned Against Their Masters: Erin and Marty do this to Mr. Wright at the end of the episode, intending to kill him for controlling them and preparing to shut them down.
