Season 2, Episode 6

Every Day

Crowley becomes a Heavenly bee and learns the truth about the Armageddon sequel. Aziraphale defends his bookshop from Shax's army. Maggie and Nina become warriors. Crowley and Aziraphale get to the bottom of the mystery of the Matchbox.

Tropes That Appear In This Episode:

  • Anguished Declaration of Love: Crowley begs Aziraphale to leave the whole "Heaven and Hell" thing behind and just be with him, followed by a kiss. Unfortunately, Aziraphale refuses to abandon Heaven, shattering both their hearts in the process.
  • The Big Damn Kiss: Before leaving the bookshop, Crowley grabs Aziraphale and kisses him to make it clear exactly what he meant about them being "together".
  • Buffy Speak: Gabriel proposes to Beelzebub that they keep the status quo static and quo-ey.
  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday: Just as with Furfur in 1941, Crowley has no memory of ever meeting Saraqael in the past with "I meet a lot of people."
  • Call-Back: Aziraphale has replaced the candles in his bookshop with LED ones and there's a lot of fire extinguishers lying around for Maggie and Nina to use to fight off the demons. When asked, he mentions that there was a fire in the shop once, indicating he's made these changes to avoid the risk of another one.
  • Cardboard Box of Unemployment: The box Gabriel arrived with in "The Arrival" turns out to have been him invoking this trope after being fired, telling the other angels that he's going to "clean out his desk" and carrying a box out to the elevator as if it contains his stuff. Of course, as an archangel, Gabriel doesn't even have a desk to clean out in the first place, but it buys him enough time to escape, and he manages to use the box to smuggle his memories out, too.
  • Chekhov's Gun: When Aziraphale opened the box Gabriel was carrying in "The Arrival" it appeared to be empty save for a single fly at the bottom. The fly turns out to be the container that Gabriel used to store his memory.
  • Everyone Can See It: Maggie and Nina encourage Crowley to tell Aziraphale about his feelings, because it's obvious that Crowley is in love with him.
  • Everyone Has Standards: It turns out Gabriel was rendered amnesiac and sent to Earth because even he thought trying to do a new Armageddon so soon after the last failed attempt was a waste of time for no good reason other than wiping out reality.
  • Eye Colour Change: Gabriel finally having his memories fully restored is shown by his eyes changing colour from Jim's human hazel to his usual violet.
  • Eye Scream: Gabriel's memory is restored when he lets the fly containing his memories crawl into his right pupil.
  • Faux Affably Evil: The Metatron appears just as kindly and eccentric as Aziraphale in his human disguise, but it's evident from his referring to Crowley as a fool when he rejects Aziraphale's offer that he's still no more better than the rest of Heaven.
  • Flipping the Bird: Maggie flips Shax and the other demons off with both of her middle fingers knowing they can't enter the bookshop.
  • Forceful Kiss: Crowley kisses Aziraphale after grabbing him by the lapels. He still gets rejected.
  • Foreshadowing: In the footage of Gabriel's trial, Gabriel accepts the angels' ruling immediately and asks if he'll be cast down to Hell as punishment, saying that he's ready to go and won't fight it. Turns out he wanted to be sent to Hell, as that's where his lover Beelzebub is. The angels deciding to keep him around and force a memory wipe on him forced him to improvise.
  • Hidden in Plain Sight: Gabriel's memories were sealed in the fly that he'd been trying to swat the entire season.
  • Hollywood Tactics: The low-end demons Shax recruits handle combat as if it were a game of Lemmings, walking towards their target without any real strategy, resulting in several of them walking into a trapped magic circle Aziraphale had set up, even though the later ones had seen their predecessors step into the circle and get discorporated. Shax is not pleased by their stupidity.
  • Holy Halo: Aziraphale has one that's embedded in his head. He can remove it and make it explode, which he does to get rid of the remaining demons in the bookshop.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: Crowley tells Muriel that after everything that's happened he needs to take Aziraphale to the Ritz for an "extremely alcoholic breakfast".
  • Internal Reformist: Aziraphale takes Metatron's offer to lead Heaven because he thinks that he and Crowley can change the place for the better.
  • Irony: After both spent Season 1 trying to wipe out Crowley and Aziraphale for breaking the rules by being friends, Gabriel and Beelzebub ended up forging their own unlikely partnership.
  • Loophole Abuse:
    • Maggie makes the mistake of insulting Shax and saying "come in here and say that to my face." Too late, she realizes that invitation allows the demons to enter.
    • How can Crowley access Heaven's "databases?" Because he was once an angel and "they never change their passwords."
  • Mythology Gag: Among the things Gabriel had in his box before he put his memories in it was the three rare Shakespeare quartos that the publisher of The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter bought the rights to and lost.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Maggie tells a taunting Shax "You wanna come in here and say that to my face?" accidentally giving the demons the invitation they needed.
  • The Nth Doctor: When Beelzebub shows up for a meeting, Gabriel doesn't recognize them and they explain, "I just got tired of the old face" after 6,000 years.
  • On the Rebound: Nina recognises that she's not in a good place after getting away from her abusive partner and shouldn't be trying to start a new relationship with Maggie just yet. Maggie understands, and says she'll wait for Nina to be ready.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Aziraphale and Crowley's fight in the bookshop is a classic example of people talking at each other but not listening. Aziraphale assumes that Crowley will be happy to become an angel again, and he's hurt by Crowley's flat rejection of their chance to be together safely in Heaven while helping people. Crowley assumes that Aziraphale's desire to reform Heaven's bureaucracy is a rejection of their "side" protecting Earth and a personal, romantic rejection of Crowley as a demon. In the heat of the argument, Crowley neglects to tell Aziraphale the information he learned about Heaven and the Metatron trying to start another Armageddon, which might have allowed Aziraphale to evaluate the Metatron’s job offer with more caution.
  • The Reveal:
    • Gabriel and Beelzebub both realized that neither truly wanted Armageddon, so have been working together to maintain the status quo. Which then turned into a romance.
    • The reason Gabriel has been humming "Everyday" is it was the song playing when he and Beelzebub made their deal, with Beelzebub making a point of saying she liked it.
    • Crowley is in love with Aziraphale.
  • Second Coming: Heaven is working on a project of this name that Metatron wants Aziraphale to lead, but it's unknown if it involves Jesus.
  • Sequel Hook: The threat caused by Gabriel's disappearance is over, but the Metatron is now working on the Second Coming, which could just as easily disrupt the status quo as Adam nearly did in the previous season.
  • Slave to PR: This is why Metatron objects to the other Archangels casting Gabriel to Hell, as another Archangel falling after Satan will make Heaven look bad.
  • Threat Backfire: Done when Gabriel and Beelzebub are ready to leave.
Uriel: If you leave, you can never come back.
Gabriel: That would be the point.
Shax: If you flee, traitor, Hell will send all its legions to hunt you down.
Beelzebub: You know as well as I do how understaffed Hell is right now.
  • Too Dumb to Live: While the demons are initially apprehensive about crossing the mystical circle Aziraphale drew, when Shax tells them to, they charge into the circle despite seeing the first demon who did so explode.
  • Wham Line: The name of the project Aziraphale has been reinstated to work on.
Metatron: We call it... the Second Coming.
  • Wham Shot: Crowley kisses Aziraphale, finally confirming how he feels about the angel.
