Go To

Say Goodbye To Daisy Miller

Rory has slept with Dean and is realizing that he is in fact a married man. Emily is sick of living in a hotel and packs her bags to go live in a hotel in France. She invites Rory to come along.

Tropes

  • Accidental Misnaming: Taylor calls Michel "Michelle", so Michel feels entitled to ignore him.
  • Angrish: Lorelai finds herself having to explain to Emily that when she left, she and Rory assumed lunch was off as well. It's a very frustrating experience, and she ends up forming incomplete sentences.
  • Berserk Button: Zach tries to fill in for Lane while she's in her room talking to Rory. Lane does not appreciate that, but what really sets her off is learning that he adjusted the seat.
  • Call-Back: Rory and Dean have sex in Miss Patty's dance studio, where they were thought to have sex in season one but at the time all they did was fall asleep.
  • Captain Obvious: Invoked. Lorelai justifies telling Rory not to sleep with married men by arguing that it is this trope.
  • Continuity Nod: Emily brings up Pennilyn Lot again.
  • Drama Queen: The basement door jams during a fight with Richard, leading Emily to climb out the basement window while disposing of her skirt and shouting a narration of what she's doing.
  • Dying Alone: Invoked. Sookie is thrilled that Luke and Lorelai have found each other, as then when Lorelai dies, someone will find the body before it starts to smell.
  • First Guy Wins: At least for now, Dean is with Rory and Luke is with Lorelai.
  • Feminine Women Can Cook: Averted with Lindsay as well. Maybe this is Dean's type. She can't get roastbeef right, and thinks it's responsible for the deterioration of her marriage.
  • Insistent Terminology: Emily insists her "mentally ill" relative wasn't mentally ill, just athletic.note
  • Love Informant: Sookie talks about how she has always known Lorelai and Luke were secretly into each other.
  • Never My Fault:
    • Emily blames Richard for the neighbors reporting a disturbance at their house after she crawled out of their basement window screaming about Richard locking her in.
    • Inverted with Kirk, who blames himself for chewing Taylor's shoe, although it was Michel's dog Paw-paw.
  • Rule of Three: Lindsay put three meat thermometers in the roastbeef.
  • Shipper on Deck: Sookie is very excited about Luke and Lorelai getting together, saying she always hoped they would realize how perfect they were for each other.
  • Shout-Out:
    • This episode's title references Daisy Miller by Henry James.
    • Richard thinks Charlie Chaplin would have found his and Emily's feud amusing.
    • Gil gets told to go join The Polyphonic Spree.
    • Miss Patty has Al Gilbert records in her studio.
    • Emily finally admits to being Dracula.
    • Emily claims travelling to Paris with her will be just like Gigi.
    • Rory accuses Lorelai of making her life a Henry James novel.
    • Specifically Daisy Miller.
  • Take That!: Emily tells Rory that if she needs to talk about her grandparents' divorce to try and understand what's happening, she should not ask her mother.
  • Title Drop: Rory says the episode title directly to Lorelai.
  • Troll: Michel told Taylor to leave his shoes outside his room to get shined so that his dogs could get at them.
  • Verbal Backspace: Luke and Lorelai think Sookie should check Kirk's butt for thorns, since she's the only one who has a kid. Well, except Lorelai, but hers is big (like Kirk) and can check its own butt (unlike Kirk).
