Recap / Gilligans Island S 2 E 19 Seer Gilligan

Go To

Gilligan discovers a bush with seeds that can let the eater read other people's minds. The other Castaways want in on the action, but everyone quickly discovers that the power causes more trouble than it's worth.

This episode contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Agent Scully: Although the Professor initially seems willing to submit the supposed mind-reading to a test, Gilligan and Ginger walk in on him arguing with the Skipper about whether mind-reading is possible. The Professor says medical science says Gilligan shouldn't be able to read minds, and medical science is always right.
  • Big Eater: Thinking that Gilligan's diet has something to do with his new ability, Mr. Howell decides he's going to eat the same diet. After a day of trying to keep up with Gilligan's appetite, he returns to his hut to lie down. Mrs. Howell protests that he has to come to dinner, causing an anguished groan.
  • Did Not Think This Through: The Professor accidentally overhears Gilligan think that his idea to use the mind-reading seeds to help world peace is dumb. Trying to explain, Gilligan points out that it probably wouldn't help to dose nations' representatives with something that already seems to be causing trouble for the Castaways.
  • Kill It with Fire: Gilligan ends up burning the mind-reading seeds and the bush.
  • A Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Read: A special type of seed gives the castaways mind-reading powers which lead to arguments and division. Luckily, the effects are temporary, and Gilligan, in one of the smartest moves he would ever make, burns the bush that produces the seeds so it will never happen again.
  • Not So Above It All: The Professor, normally one of the most level-headed of the castaways, snaps a book in Gilligan's face after the first mate points out that his idea of using the mind-reading seeds to achieve world peace turned out to be a bad one.
  • Power-Up Food: The seeds give the castaways mind-reading powers.
  • Simple-Minded Wisdom: Gilligan, despite his usual ditziness, easily sees the flaw in the Professor's idea to use the seeds to achieve world peace. Later, he takes the wisest course possible when he sees how the mind-reading seeds are causing arguments and disunity among the castaways — he burns the bush.
