  • Story Arc: The Avalon World Tour
  • Characters: The Manhattan Clan (Hudson, Brooklyn, Broadway, and Lexington), King Arthur, and Griff
  • Enemy(ies): MacBeth, Banquo, and Fleance

Arthur Pendragon and Griff are sent to New York by a magic incantation in a quest to retrieve Excalibur from the Lady in the Lake. They run into Goliath's clan and get their help, but MacBeth eavesdrops and seeing the description of the true king in himself, seeks to find the sword first.

MacBeth (and his minions) return in "Nightwatch" and "The Journey" while Arthur and Griff continue their adventure in "The Rock". The Lady of the Lake returns (in cameo) in "The Gathering part one".

This Episode contains the following Tropes

  • And I'm the Queen of Sheba:
    Griff: Who are you?
Arthur: I am Arthur Pendragon, King of Britain.
Griff: Uh-huh. And I'm the Queen Mum.
  • And the Adventure Continues: After reclaiming his sword, Arthur says the next order of business is finding Merlin.
  • Armor-Piercing Question:
Arthur: But it is my sword!
Stone: It belongs to the true king. Are you still he?
  • Chew-Out Fake-Out: While resolving to find Merlin, Arthur says he also has to get Griff back home to England. Griff would rather continuing helping, but Arthur sternly tells him that only a knight may do so. Griff is disappointed but dignified about it, only to be completely surprised when Arthur formally makes him a knight.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • The first person Arthur meets while in London is Griff, who has managed to avoid any lethal mishaps since Goliath got him to the present via the Phoenix Gate back in "M.I.A.".
    • The Stone of Destiny was briefly shown during Macbeth's coronation during a flashback in "City of Stone part three". Now it is found by Arthur and Griff and now revealed to have magical properties (as well as sentience).
    • Arthur said he believed he had been awakened before he was supposed to back in "Avalon part three", which the Stone of Destiny and the Lady of the Lake both confirm.
    • When asking Arthur about the current whereabouts of Goliath and co, the Manhattan Clan specifically refer to their outings in Prague (as informed by Halcyon Renard) and Nigeria (as told to them about Diane Maza).
  • Defeat Means Friendship: Done in the episode "Pendragon" between Macbeth and King Arthur after Arthur defeats Macbeth to reclaim Excalibur.
Arthur: "No king can lead without his knights. You have fought a good fight, I would have you with me."
Macbeth: "I have been a King too long to serve any man. But if you ever need me to stand by your side, I will come."
  • Desperately Looking for a Purpose in Life: Having gotten over his desire to kill himself, Macbeth ends up seeking Excalibur to give some new purpose to his life.
  • Dumbass Has a Point: In response to all this "timeless king" talk, Banquo points out how Macbeth's been alive for a long time. This causes Macbeth to think that Exact Words could allow him to claim Excalibur.
  • Exact Words: It is said the sword can be claimed by a timeless king. Macbeth reasons that applies to himself as much as Arthur.
  • Have We Met?: Due to not remembering his experiences on Avalon, Macbeth has this reaction to Arthur knowing his name.
  • Hypocrite: Averted. Claiming what everyone thought was Excalibur, Macbeth chastises Arthur for refusing to bow to the true king. When Arthur claims the real deal, Macbeth doesn't hesitate to bow before him.
  • Internal Reveal: Arthur explains to the Manhattan Clan that Goliath and the others are being sent to various locations by Avalon itself.
  • Not in My Contract: The spell that Macbeth performs causes some extreme weather. Barely holding onto an umbrella, Banquo tells Fleance they don't get paid enough to put up with this kind of stuff.
  • Poorly Disguised Pilot: This episode was created as a backdoor pilot for a Pendragon series which would feature Arthur and Griff heading out to wander the world in search of Merlin and the Knights of the Round Table, accompanied by Sir Percival's wife Lady Blanchefleur. Though this Spin-Off show never came to fruition, the plotline was at least continued in the SLG comics. invoked
  • Replaced with Replica: The immortal Anti-Villain Macbeth and an awakened King Arthur race to claim Excalibur in the modern world, and with it the title of "The Once and Future King". Macbeth actually beats Arthur to the location, but winds up claiming an ordinary copy of the sword that breaks in combat shortly afterward.
  • Screw Destiny: Arthur is chastised for waking up before he was supposed to. He simply remarks he's up early and ready to get to work.
  • Who's on First?: One of the clues concerns a maze, but Hudson says there are none in Manhattan.
    Lexington: [realizing] Brooklyn!
    Brooklyn: What?!
Lexington: No, no, she-she means Brooklyn. The hedge maze in the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens.
