Recap / Garfield And Friends S 3 E 16

Go To

The sixteenth episode of the third season of Garfield and Friends.

Post-Opening Sequence Line: "It doesn't start till' the fat lady screams."

Stick to It

Garfield dislikes throwing the stick so Odie can fetch it, so he throws it as hard as he can so that Odie will not bring it back. Odie chases the stick to just about every place a dog can go.

Orson in Wonderland

While playing croquet with Lanolin, Orson's croquet ball goes clear into the woods. After he reaches his ball, he drifts off and dreams a dream much similar to Alice in Wonderland.

For Cats Only

This episode discusses how cats came to Earth from another planet and now pretend to be pets for humans.

Orson in Wonderland contains examples of:

For Cats Only contains examples of:

  • The Bad Guy Wins: While the cats aren't technically evil as they only wanted to become pets to the humans, Garfield and the other cats get away with dumbing down dogs so that the dogs won't try to drive them away back to their planet.
  • Dogs Are Dumb: Subverted. It turns out dogs were clever enough in the beginning to have posed a significant threat to the cats' plan to become pets to humans, but one spy who infiltrated the cats base was detected and captured, making the cats decide to send out brainwaves to make every dog dumber.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Sure, the cats are selfish and lazy, but they never planned to enslave the humans. Instead, they settled on becoming adopted by the humans as pets, knowing that they’d be served and pampered regardless.
  • He Knows Too Much: A non-fatal version. The cats capture a dog spy who might have ended their status as pets to the humans and dumb him down with brainwaves.
  • Humans Are Morons: Garfield says this is what "Meow" means.
  • Oh, Crap!: The whole ending is one big “Oh crap” moment for the humans and the cats: Unbeknownst to the cats, Jon’s blonde doppelgänger (see Suspiciously Similar Substitute below) has been watching Garfield’s presentation. After it ends, he immediately leaves the house to warn everybody about cats having conquered human beings. His two cats (who were in the presentation) are flustered that the secret’s now out and debate ways to quickly brainwash him, before the secret spreads to the entire human race.
  • Shout-Out: There is one to the Chasm swing scene in Star Wars: A New Hope when Odie tried swinging for escape as did Luke and Leia when they fled from the Stormtroopers. Here, Garfield shot down Odie's rope with his laser gun and they drained his brain to insure he never tell their secret.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: In a few scenes, we see a character with the same outfit and bodily proportions as Jon but with straight blonde hair and a completely different voice.
  • Viewers Are Morons: Unsurprisingly, at least one human watched the TV programming that was for cat only (specifically, the bizarre blonde Jon look-alike mentioned above). The cats decide to erase his memories or at least think it was just fictitious... by making him watch lots of sports, sitcoms and other TV shows that could distort his firm grip on reality.
