Everyone in New New York becomes obsessed with Mom's latest product, the eyePhone, unaware of Mom's darker intentions. Fry and Bender quickly get into a contest over whose videos will get the most subscribers, which Fry may win if he posts a video of a mutant blemish on Leela's butt.
Tropes:
- Absurd Brand Name: eyePhone, of course, but also "Twitcher", with its equivalent to "Tweets" being known as "Twits."
- The Bad Guy Wins: Mom's scheme to brainwash the million subscribers works like a charm.
- Department of Redundancy Department: This humorous exchange from Mom and her sons:Mom: Amazing! Some dumb bastard has nearly a million other dumb bastards following his every twit! Are you dumb bastards listening to me, you dumb bastards!?
Inger: Why are you so angry, mommy?
Mom: I'm sorry. I guess I'm just nervous about my evil plan. YOU DUMB BASTARDS!!! (smacks all three of them) - Dramatic Thunder: Lampshaded when Igner notes the lightning flashing outside when Mom prepares to unleash the Twit-Worm.Igner: Uh, shouldn't you wait for the weather to clear up?
Mom: No. - Exactly What It Says on the Tin: Eye. Phone. Goes exactly where you think it does. Same for the earpiece.
- Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: When Fry uploaded the humiliating video with Leela's boil and says how he can't let Leela see the video, he tells Leela to lock the doors, only realizing too late that Leela had already watched the video.
- Eye Scream: The EyePhone is installed by having the device forcibly shoved into the eyesocket. Fry's screams as his is installed are horrifying.
- For the Evulz: Mom's plan with the Twit-Worm? Brainwash everyone into buying her new Eye-Phone, which they'd do anyway.
- Garrulous Growth: Susan the Singing Boil. Leela is revealed to have a talking and singing boil named Susan on her right butt-cheek. Leela tries to hide it and is extremely ashamed of Susan. She lances her every few months, but she always grows back. Leela is a human mutant with one huge eye and the boil's another of her mutations. Fry accidentally discovers and films the boil which devastates Leela.
- Instant Humiliation: Just Add YouTube!: Bender and Fry's twitter battle in the episode ends with Fry releasing a video of Leela's singing butt boil to the world. To make it up to her, he releases a worse one of himself diving into a hot tub full of two-headed goat puke. And hitting the concrete instead. And then falling in anyway.
- iPhony: The scenes introducing the eyePhone serve to poke fun at the hype over so many new Apple products.
- Laser-Guided Karma: Fry decides to take a dip in the goat vomit to make up for what he did to Leela, only for the diving board to break before he can jump off. Then he falls into the vomit anyway.
- Marilyn Maneuver: Leela during her humiliating montage after her singing boil is exposed online, she attempts to hide her appearance only for her dress to fly up and the paparazzi group take pictures.
- No-Sell: Fry apparently gets infected with the mind control virus, but it has no affect on him due to his immunity to mind control.
- Only the Leads Get a Happy Ending: Once provided the page image of Fry and Leela making up while Mom's enslaved consumers march towards her newest product.
- Politicians Kiss Babies: Mayor Poopenmeyer kisses a robot baby before tossing it into a dumpster with the rest of the city's e-waste.
- Sex Sells: Fry makes a video explaining his political views, and it turns off all his viewers. Bender quickly repeats the process, but has Amy in a bikini doing the explaining. It gets a ludicrous number of views.
- Social Media Is Bad: Both the "evil social network" and "social media turns people into jerks" variation. After getting EyePhones, everyone tries to get the most followers on "Twitcher", and are eventually all infected by a "Twit-worm" which turns them into zombies who only want to upgrade to the next model.
- Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: When Mom says that if both Bender and Fry gain a million subscribers at the same time then that means she'll be able to brainwash two million people instead of just one million, Walt mentions that, given the chance that there are people subscribed to both Fry and Bender, it's more likely that the actual number of brainwashed will be between one and two million. Of course he gets slapped for his trouble but later on, Mom repeats his statement without shame or irony, showing that even she can't really deny its accuracy.
- Take That!:
- Mom's eyePhone exists largely to make jabs at Apple and its products, with the clerk outright listing the eyePhone's flaws to Fry (i.e. no choice of carrier, battery unable to hold a charge and terrible reception), not that this deters Fry from wanting to buy the product.
- Susan Boyle is mocked through Leela having a sentient boil named Susan on her rear who is a dreadful singer.
- Throw the Dog a Bone: After Fry falls in the goat vomit and humiliates himself online, Leela tells him he didn't have to do that but she is still touched and hugs him at the urging of her boil.
- Unknown Rival: The protagonists spend the entire episode completely oblivious to Mom's plan.
- Vomit Indiscretion Shot: Mr. Chunks is usually vomiting, except when he vomits himself to death late in the episode.
