Tropes present in this episode include:

  • The Bus Came Back: Lan Fan. Unfortunately, it's in time to witness her grandfather's death.
  • Eyecatch: Fu and the Gold-Toothed Doctor.
  • Eye Scream: After Fu dies, Ling immediately punches out Bradley's Ultimate Eye.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Fu attempts to rush Bradley with several lit grenades strapped to his chest. However this gets Subverted into a Senseless Sacrifice as Bradley easily slices off the fuses of the grenades in one swipe of his sword, opening up Fu's torso in the process. Then it gets Double Subverted as Buccaneer uses the distraction to stab a sword through Fu's back, piercing Bradley in the gut.
  • Irony: In Xing, alchemists specialize in medicine and healing. When Ling is desperately begging for any of the present alchemists to save Fu's life, he realizes the cruel irony that Amestrian alchemists can only apply their alchemy for war and killing. It's not lost on the soldiers, who hang their heads in shame that their alchemy is useless to even save an old man's life.
  • Logical Weakness: As powerful as Bradley's Ultimate Eye is, it's still an eye — if he's concentrating on something else, he can't see surprise attacks coming.
  • Moment of Silence: The Eye Catch showing Fu is silent following his death.
  • Pre-Mortem One-Liner: Not quite prior to death, but after Wrath gains the upper hand and overwhelms Fu, he gives him this line.
Wrath: It's impressive how quickly you move; you're even older than I am! However, this is as old as you're going to get!
  • Senseless Sacrifice: Barely averted. Fu's attempted sacrifice goes horribly wrong and ultimately ends up killing him, but it gives Buccaneer the chance to deliver a stab through Bradley's gut.
  • Shut Up, Hannibal!: When General Edison tries to justify sacrificing the population of Amestris by stating all the souls would become one within the members of the Senior Staff and they would create a world without war, Izumi isn't having it and slaps him with her sandal and does it again when Edison tries to tell the Central Soldiers they should be following his orders.
