"Up on the Roof" is an episode in the eighth season of Full House.

D.J. and Kimmy decide to pull a prank on Principal Robolard after hearing about one that Jesse did during his own high school years. This prank being lifting Robolard's classic convertible onto the roof of the school, but trouble arises when an approaching thunderstorm threatens to destroy the car's interior due to having accomplished the prank while the convertible top was down, at which point they need Jesse's help to get the car hot-wired to put it back up before it starts pouring, only for Jesse to get caught by security and likely to end up in jail. Meanwhile, Rebecca teaches Michelle how to cook, resolving to cook dinner for the rest of the family.

Tropes seen in this episode include:

  • A Storm Is Coming: D.J. and Kimmy obviously forgot to check the weather conditions before they accomplished their prank. Upon returning home, they hear a rumble of thunder outside to signify an approaching storm. D.J. quickly remembers the top of Principal Robolard's convertible is down and the rain will destroy the interior, but they can't put it back up, since it's an automatic top and they'd need the keys, but Jesse helps them hotwire the car to fix this issue, to which he ends up being caught.
Jesse: It's a good thing you guys got that prank done in time. Looks like it's going to pour any minute out there.
D.J.: Oh, my gosh! Kimmy, Robolard's car is on the roof!
Kimmy: I know, I can't get over it either.
D.J.: ...with the top down! Kimmy, the interior's going to be destroyed!
Kimmy: This prank is turning out to be great!
DJ: No, Kimmy, the idea of the prank was not to ruin his car, just ruin his day. We gotta get back there and put the top up. Wait, we can't— it's an automatic top and we'd need the keys! We're dead!
Jesse: Well, maybe not yet. You know what? I could hotwire the car, but we gotta hurry.
D.J.: How did you learn how to hotwire a car?
    Jesse: Uh, science project.
[with the storm approaching, D.J., Kimmy and Jesse hurry to the school]
  • Clap Your Hands If You Believe: After most of the Tanner family have had their dinner that's made by Rebecca and Michelle, quite a few of them start feeling uncomfortable after spotting Comet not looking good after having consuming some of the meatloaf, only to feel fine again after discovering that Comet had swallowed some Play-Doh-like substance, which prompts a short discussion about how one can make something happen with a strong enough belief. Michelle then proceeds to claim she believes Danny will raise her allowance in an attempt to test the theory.
  • Didn't Think This Through: When D.J. comes up with the idea to have Principal Robolard's car hoisted onto the roof of the school, she, Kimmy, Duane and the other students participating in the prank make two mistakes: 1): they didn't check the weather conditions and 2): the convertible top was down. When a thunderstorm approaches and threatens to destroy the car's interior, D.J. and Kimmy couldn't put the top up since it was an automatic top and they'd need the keys to activate it, but Jesse helps them hotwire it to fix the problem, only for him to be caught by security.
  • Dodgy Toupee: Principal Robolard has one, and Jesse mentions that his high school prank involved snatching said toupee and flying it on the flagpole. By the present time, it's been replaced with a full-fledged wig.
  • Everyone Has Standards: D.J. may have wanted to pull off a senior prank that involved lifting the principal's car onto the school's roof, but her Exact Words were she doesn't want Robolard's car to get ruined, just his day.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: In the process of trying to prevent D.J. from backing out of pulling a prank, Kimmy tells her the prank "could be a classic". It's at this point that D.J., having remembered from the earlier conversation with Jesse about the car that Robolard has been driving since his own high school years, which Jesse describes as "a classic" at one point, comes up with the idea of having said car hoisted up on the roof as their prank of choice.
D.J.: "A classic"... that gives me an idea.
  • Fall Guy: Attempted for comedic effect, as Kimmy shows up at Principal Robolard's office at the end of the episode, well after D.J. has already confessed everything to Robolard and is completely forgiven, to volunteer Duane to take the blame.
    D.J.: Duane?
    Duane: Whatever.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Played for Laughs. Principal Robolard is quite ready to have Jesse turned in to the police when he believes Jesse to be the culprit of the prank on his car, but he's more than willing to completely forgive D.J. after she confesses to him as the mastermind for said prank instead, with the only caveat being that she keep a straight face while he puts on the facade of hating said prank. When Jesse protests about this drastic difference in attitudes, Robolard cites Jesse's perfect hair as the reason for his envy-induced attitude against Jesse, pulling off his wig and showing his balding gray hair for further evidence, much to Jesse's surprise.
    Jesse: Oh, my — it's a wig.
  • Oh, Crap!: As a storm approaches, D.J. has this when she suddenly remembers the convertible top for Principal Robolard's car is down after they accomplished the prank and the impending rain will destroy the interior.
  • So Proud of You: This is Jesse's reaction to D.J. (with help from Kimmy and Duane) pulling a prank on Principal Robolard that's bigger than the one Jesse himself pulled on the same high school principal during his own high school years.
Jesse: I always knew, one day, some crazy, devil-may-care maniac would surpass my prank. I am proud to call that maniac my niece. Hug me!
    *Jesse and D.J. hug*
  • Superior Successor: After hearing of the prank Jesse pulled on the Principal Robolard back when Jesse himself was in high school, Kimmy enlists D.J. in pulling a bigger prank, which D.J. eventually does, as Jesse's prank was to get the Robolard's toupee out of his scalp using a fishing rod (which Jesse claimed was "the catch of the day") and tying it to the flagpole, whereas D.J.'s has Robolard's car hoisted onto the school roof. Hearing that D.J. had pulled a bigger prank than the one Jesse himself did impresses Jesse.
  • Taking the Heat: As D.J. is in the process of confessing to the Principal Robolard about her involvement with the prank towards his car, Jesse, having already been caught and presumed the prime suspect at that moment, tries to pin the blame solely on himself, but D.J. refuses and spills the beans anyway.
  • Tempting Fate:
    • Jesse claims "Finally, peace and quiet" once nearly every other Tanner household member leaves and tilts his chair back for a moment of relaxation, which ends abruptly within seconds when Kimmy barges inside the house screaming "D.J.!!!", the shock from which causes Jesse to fall back -- literally -- on his chair.
    • During the process of trying to work out details on their prank of choice, Kimmy brings Duane for help. D.J. isn't impressed initially, though it ends up zigzagged when he turns out to actually be able to help complete the prank of choice.
Kimmy: Deej, meet the answer to our prayers.
      *Duane enters the room*
D.J.: (looks upwards) Apparently we had a bad connection.
  • Your Other Left: D.J.'s prank of choice on Principal Robolard involves having his car hoisted onto the roof of the school building with a crane, with Duane operating said crane on the ground and D.J. monitoring the progress on the roof. At one point D.J. shouts for Duane to move the crane slightly to the left, but the crane doesn't move, so D.J. shouts to him "YOUR LEFT!", which clears up the confusion and helps to get the task accomplished.
