Go To

"The Day of the Rhino" is an episode in the seventh season of Full House.

Michelle and Denise each place an order for a Rigby the Rhino stuffed toy but find themselves disappointed when the box contains a small plastic figure instead, which culminates in Joey taking them to the local mall where a Rigby promotional event is to take place and stage a protest. In the meantime, D.J., after getting a bad hairdo from Kimmy's stylist, elicits a reaction from Steve that leads to lessons about honesty from the other adults.

Tropes include:

  • Alliterative Name: The letter "R" gets this treatment in this episode, with "Rigby the Rhino" being the main focus. Near the end of the episode, Stephanie answers the doorbell and meets the Rigby mascot with bodyguards at the door, who request to meet Michelle, with her unflattering nickname for Rigby also qualifying for this trope.
Stephanie: Michelle! It's Ripoff the Rhino!
  • Brick Joke: D.J. complains to Kimmy about having her hair done by Kimmy's hairstylist instead of the one Jesse recommends earlier, resulting in D.J.'s bad hairdo, all so Kimmy can get a neck shave for free. Stephanie, upon meeting Kimmy shortly thereafter, compliments her for her neck looking smooth, which Kimmy appreciates.
  • Cosmetic Catastrophe: The episode starts with D.J. deciding to get a hairdo, but she ends up going to the one that's... not very good, all so that Kimmy can get a free neck shave. The result is so bad that Even the Dog Is Ashamed, and Rebecca and Vicky have to step in to get D.J.'s hair back to its pre-"makeover" appearance.
  • Even the Dog Is Ashamed: Played for Laughs. DJ gets a bad haircut that is so awful even the family dog, Comet, runs away from her.
D.J.: Now I'm scaring the dog!
  • Honesty Is the Best Policy: Steve ends up proving this point when he, upon seeing D.J.'s face that's covered with an excess of makeup, struggles with his attempts to use milder words to say to D.J. before expressing outright disdain towards it and saying that he finds her more beautiful without excessive makeup, which earns him praise from D.J.
  • Lying to Protect Your Feelings: After Steve's initial reaction to D.J.'s botched hair makeover causes D.J. to be upset towards him, the ensuing moral lesson taking place in separate rooms has this trope in place. Jesse and Danny try to teach Steve to be better at lying to the womenfolk they're in love with in order to not upset them, whereas Rebecca and Vicky tell D.J. that men tend to fold when it comes to being honest for the sake of their romantic partner's feelings.
  • Noodle Incident: Apparently Kimmy had been struck by lightning some time ago, as her dialogue with D.J. after others react to D.J.'s bad hairdo indicates. The details of the incident in question are never revealed, though.
D.J.: I could have gone to Alejandro's, but no. We had to go to Fat Tony's so you could have your free neck shave.
Kimmy: Sorry, Deej. I guess that lightning strike was worse than I thought.
  • Rule of Three: The reaction to D.J.'s bad hairdo from other people is "yikes", for the total of three times. D.J. is already getting tired of it by the third time.
    Michelle: Yikes.
    Denise: Yikes.
    [...]
    Stephanie: Yikes.
    D.J.: I don't want to hear it.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: D.J. expresses her desire to get a makeover at the start of the episode, and so Jesse recommends Alejandro's based on his own personal experience. That ends up not happening after Kimmy takes her to Fat Tony's instead.
  • The Stool Pigeon: Steve serves this role when he blurts out Jesse and Danny's "lesson" to him as he decides that Honesty Is the Best Policy instead, which causes Rebecca and Vicky to criticize Jesse and Danny, who quickly backpedal to save face.note
  • Uncanny Valley Makeup: Late in the episode, D.J. greets Steve after putting on an inordinate amount of makeup, per Rebecca and Vicky's suggestion.
  • Waving Signs Around: Part of the protest Joey leads against Rigby the Rhino in the latter's promotional event include having some participants, Stephanie being one of them, holding the signs with "Rigby is a ripoff" written on them.
