Recap / Friends S 9 E 17 The One With The Memorial Service

Go To

Ross and Chandler prank each other by updating each other's college website page with fake and bizarre information, which culminates in Ross being declared dead. Despite everything, Ross is bothered by the lack of response to such grave news and so throws a memorial service for himself to see how many people come. Emma has grown attached to Joey's stuffed penguin Hugsy, but Joey is reluctant to share. Phoebe enlists Monica to stop her from trying to contact Mike.

Tropes:

  • Attending Your Own Funeral: Ross organizes his own memorial service to see if anyone shows up. Only two people come: a guy who mainly wants to hit on Chandler and a girl who had a crush on Ross. The gig's up when Ross comes out of the room for a chance at flirting with the girl, but she's disgusted at him for lying about his death and leaves.
  • Bait-and-Switch: Joey coos over the crib's occupant... but he's talking about Hugsy, not Emma.
Joey: Look at you. All sweet and innocent. Sleeping like an angel... (tone changes from sweet to resentful) with Emma's chubby little hands wrapped around you.
  • Bestiality Is Depraved: Chandler writes on Ross' page that he has sex with dinosaurs and is dating one. Ross gets angry at him for it and it's what starts their prank war.
  • Death as Comedy: When Ross says claiming he died isn't funny, Chandler retorts that how he allegedly died is pretty funny: hit by a blimp.
  • Dude, Not Funny!: Ross feels this way about Chandler posting that he's dead, pointing out that people might start calling his parents who will be upset and confused because they don't know it's a joke.
  • Halfway Plot Switch: Ross and Chandler's prank war soon transitions into Ross organizing his own memorial service to test if anybody would come to it.
  • Honorary Uncle: Rachel tries to persuade Joey to give Hugsy up by referring to him as Emma's "uncle Joey" who she loves so much. It almost convinces him to give her the penguin but he decides he can't do it.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Joey gets a new Hugsy for Emma so he can get the old one back, but she prefers the old one. He tries to argue that they're the same, but when he's stuck with the new one he mutters to himself they're not the same.
  • Lady Looks Like a Dude: A man who ostensibly comes for Ross' memorial service is actually trying to see what his chances with Chandler are. He gets disappointed when he sees Monica, but not for the reasons you'd think; he confuses her for a very well-shaven man. She wonders what about her looks masculine after he leaves; Chandler guesses it's the way she stands.
  • Mama Bear: Rachel quickly wakes up and gets into attack mode when someone approaches Emma in the middle of the night, but it's just Joey trying to get Hugsy back.
  • Manchild: Joey is forced to share his stuffed toy penguin with Emma and is rather petulant about the matter.
  • Mistaken for Gay: Ross writes on Chandler's page that he's gay. Chandler gets many congratulatory messages as a result, and the man who attends Ross' memorial service tries to hit on him.
  • Only Sane Man: Chandler finds himself this during the fake memorial service.
Ross: I'm dead and no one cares?
Monica: I look like a man?
Chandler: Please, one ridiculous problem at a time.
  • Sex with the Ex: Phoebe and Mike both try to enlist friends to keep them from seeking each other out for sex. Mike gives his friend the slip and makes it to Phoebe's place. When Manny shows up he and Monica get into an argument that gives Phoebe and Mike a chance to sneak off to her bedroom.
  • The Un-Favorite: During the end credits Ross is on the phone to his mother apologising for the post about him being dead. Apparently Judy makes a comment about him dying leaving her childless, forcing Ross to remind her about Monica.
  • Think Unsexy Thoughts: When Monica has to go to the bathroom she provides Phoebe and Mike with a list of off-putting things to think about while she's away so they won't try to have sex.
Monica: Here's a few things you can discuss: mucus, fungus and the idea of me and Ross doing it.
