Go To

Chandler has to spend Christmas in Tulsa for work, making him and Monica unhappy.

Tropes

  • Armor-Piercing Question: Wendy asks Chandler why, if his wife is so great, is he spending Christmas away from her.
  • Awful Wedded Life: Why Wendy makes a move on Chandler and then asks what's it like to be Happily Married.
  • Benevolent Boss: Chandler lets all his subordinates go home early so that they can be with their families.
  • Brick Joke: Chandler had forgotten to tell Monica that he was also working on New Year's Eve. It turns out he forgot to tell his subordinates that, as well.
  • Clip Show: The episode includes a number of clips from previous Christmas episodes. However, it's also pretty plot important, as it features Chandler quitting his job.
  • Digging Yourself Deeper: Chandler over sending the other workers home and being alone with Wendy (a runner-up Miss Oklahoma) to an increasingly displeased Monica. Rachel finally tells him to just stop talking.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Chandler says this word-for-word after quitting his high-paying corporate job.
  • Happily Married: Chandler shoots down Wendy because he's happy with Monica. Saying that is what finally convinces him to quit and go home to be with his loved ones.
  • Insecure Love Interest: Monica is displeased to learn that Chandler is alone with Wendy.
  • Mondegreen Gag: Chandler's attempt to explain Wendy's position.
    Chandler: She's below me.
    Monica: She did what?!
    Chandler: Below. Me.
  • My New Gift Is Lame: After returning home Chandler gives the gang the donation letters he originally tried to give to his co-workers. When the gang start to complain Chandler reminds them he's now unemployed.
  • Nothing Is the Same Anymore: After nine seasons Chandler quits his job.
  • Properly Paranoid: Monica's insecurity that something might happen during Chandler's business trip proves better-founded than Chandler thought — as he puts it when turning Wendy down, "she's entitled to be a little paranoid... or in this case, right on the money."
  • Running Gag: Ross asks Rachel if she really likes a gift or if she's going to exchange it, to which she replies "well, not right this second."
  • Seduction-Proof Marriage: Chandler rejects Wendy's advances, telling her: "what I have with my wife is pretty great, so nothing is ever gonna happen between us."
  • Skewed Priorities: As Wendy starts to make a move on him, Chandler says she's getting ham on his only tie. He lampshades how this isn't the thing to focus on.
