Recap / Friends S 8 E 17 The One With The Tea Leaves

Go To

Phoebe reads her tea leaves and predicts that she will meet the guy of her dreams soon; she does meet a guy, but it's not what she hoped for. Things are awkward between Rachel and Joey, so Rachel impulsively tells him that her boss is trying to buy her baby, leading to Joey threatening her boss. Ross breaks into Mona's apartment to get his favorite shirt back. Monica and Chandler bicker over organizing their CDs.

Tropes:

  • Celebrity Paradox: If Monica and Chandler have a Bruce Springsteen CD in their collection, who was the dancing girl in 'Dancing in the Dark' in the Friends universe?
  • Fate Drives Us Together: Phoebe comments on running into this guy everywhere she goes, including the laundromat, coffee shop, and adult bookstore. She eventually decides to give him a chance after she reads her tea leaves and interprets them to mean he's the guy of her dreams. He ends up being a total jerk who makes inappropriate comments about her breasts over dinner.
  • First-World Problems: While Rachel is worried her relationship with Joey is fractured due to the complicated feelings between them, Monica and Chandler are having an issue with their music CDs not being in the right cases, annoying Rachel to no end.
Rachel: OH MY GOD, you guys have SUCH problems, I feel so terrible for you!
  • House Amnesia: Rachel asks Chandler to leave the room so she can talk to Joey even though they're in Chandler's apartment at the time.
Chandler: I'm sorry, you're kicking me out of my own living room?
    Rachel: Yeah.
Chandler: I'll be in there. (heads to his bedroom)
  • Insistent Terminology: Ross insists his misplaced shirt is not pink, it's salmon. Just about everybody else calls it pink, to his annoyance.
  • Key Under the Doormat: Mona keeps the spare key to her apartment in the light fixture near the door. This has the unfortunate side effect of making the key really hot to the touch. In the extended cut of the epiosde Ross reminds Mona that he warned her not to keep the key there as anyone could find it.
  • Neat Freak: Monica is so into cleanliness that going into a dry cleaner is, as she puts it, like Disneyland for her.
  • Reading Tea Leaves: Phoebe reads tea leaves for the girls, including herself. Monica gets a ladder indicating either a promotion or a violent death, which causes mild panic as she's Head Chef and can't get promoted. Phoebe's own leaves tell her she's about to meet the man of her dreams but the next guy she meets turns out to be a creep. As for Rachel...
Phoebe: I see a circle. Which can either mean you’re having a baby or you’re gonna make a scientific discovery!
Rachel: (pats her heavily pregnant stomach) Well, I have been spending a lot of time in the lab.
    • Counts as Foreshadowing too... as both Monica's and Phoebe's predictions come true in the following season: Monica will transfer over to a head chef job at a more upscale restaurant, Javu, and Phoebe meets her dream guy, Mike, who will become her husband in the final season.
