Tropes

  • Actually a Good Idea: When Chandler and Phoebe pass off Jill's shopping as their own to Rachel, Phoebe calls a pair of pants "apartment pants", a mangling of Jill's "give-me-a-new-apartment pants". Later, Rachel admits that she pitched the idea of apartment pants to her boss and it was accepted.
  • Batman Gambit: After her more forceful attempts at seduction fail, Monica resorts to feigning admitting she's sick and then rubbing some medicine on her bare chest. As she expects, Chandler is ultimately turned on.
  • Crying Wolf: After Joey sings "Happy Birthday" to 20 different women in one day, Gunther has him pay for the last one, even though Joey keeps trying to tell him it really is her birthday.
  • Daddy's Girl: Rachel is thrilled to learn that she's the one daughter that Dr. Green is proud of.
  • Death Glare: Jill got cut off because she bought a boat for a friend. Chandler quips the group made friends with the wrong sister, prompting this reaction from Rachel.
  • Determinator: Monica won't rest until she "proves" that she's not sick.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Chandler is against having sex with a sick person. Subverted in the end, which he attributes to "all the vaporizing action."
  • Feigning Healthiness: Monica insists that she's perfectly healthy (though she isn't fooling anyone) because she sees being sick as a sign of weakness.
  • Girl on Girl Is Hot: Ross is touched by Rachel seemingly being okay with him going out with Jill, calling her the bigger person and regretting he doesn't have a brother to return the favor.
Ross: Hey, if you ever want to go out with Monica, you have my blessing.
Joey: [passing by] Oh-ho, and mine!
  • Good with Numbers: Joey is normally not this, but he appears to have made an effort with his new job. In the teaser, he rattles off the different prices of what the group got at Central Perk and has no trouble adding up the total bill. As everyone else starts taking out wallets, Chandler is incredulous that a guy who previously couldn't figure out half the price of an $80 phone bill suddenly got good at math.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Phoebe is disgusted by Joey giving away free stuff to pretty customers in order to get dates. When he offers her a free scone to calm her down, she giggles over being considered pretty.
  • Intimate Lotion Application: Monica grows frustrated with Chandler because he refuses to have sex with her while she is sick. As a final attempt to seduce him, she requests him to rub ointment on her bare chest. Though he declines, she proceeds to apply it herself, which manages to arouse him. The subplot concludes with Chandler excitedly running to their bedroom while Monica admires the ointment and whispers that it "worked like a charm".
  • Limited Social Circle: Lampshaded when the entire group is in the apartment and there's suddenly a knock on the door. Everyone is openly confused by this and Phoebe actually counts to make sure they're all there.
  • My Sister Is Off-Limits: Rachel cuts off Joey's attempt to hit on Jill and is very uncomfortable with the idea of Ross going out with her.
  • Obviously Not Fine: Monica insists she's fine, despite being all snotty and stuffed up.
Ross: If you say "fine" with a D at the end, you're clearly not fine.
  • Replacement Flat Character: Jill's selfishness and irresponsibility is used to show how much Rachel has grown since the beginning of the series.
  • Rummage Fail: Ross asks if anyone has any gum. Phoebe claims that she does and reaches into her bag, pulling out a purse, a scarf, some sweets, silly string, a single shoe, a goldfish in a bag — at which point Ross says that he's actually fine.
  • Shipping Torpedo: Phoebe notices that Ross and Jill are getting flirty and moves to sit between them to put a stop to it.
  • Sick Episode: For Monica in the B-plot.
  • Spoiled Brat: Jill is even worse than Rachel was back in the first season.
  • "Well Done, Daughter!" Gal: Rachel has a hard time hiding how delighted she is to hear that she's the only daughter her father is proud of.
