Recap / Friends S 5 E 13 The One With Joeys Bag

Go To

Phoebe's grandmother dies, leading her to meet her father, Frank, at the funeral. Joey dresses up for an audition, including carrying around a "man's bag" with encouragement from Rachel, but he's mocked by Chandler and Ross for it. Chandler discovers Monica's massages are awful, but struggles to tell her so.

Tropes:

  • Aborted Arc: Phoebe asks Frank whether he knew Lily but does not mention Phoebe (her birth mom), their polyamory relationship or anything of that kind, as if this arc never existed.
  • Big "OMG!": When Chandler is finally entirely truthful about her awful massages, Monica starts crying.
Chandler: It's okay. You don't have to be the best at everything.
Monica: OH MY GOD, YOU DON'T KNOW ME AT ALL!
  • Birth-Death Juxtaposition: Played with. Just after Phoebe announces that her grandmother is dead Monica runs in to tell the gang there's two two people having sex in a car outside.
Phoebe: Actually it's kinda cool. It's like one life ends and another begins.
Monica: (quietly to the guys) Not the way they're doing it.
  • Double Entendre: Joey mishears "unisex" as "You Need Sex". When Rachel spells out U-N-I (you and I), he gives her a lecherous smirk.
  • The "Fun" in "Funeral": We don't get to see Frances' funeral but Phoebe greets everyone by handing them a pair of 3-D glasses.
  • The Hilarity of Hats: Joey's plot starts with him wearing a top hat out of nowhere, mismatching the rest of his clothes.
  • Insistent Terminology: Joey doesn't own a purse; it's a men’s bag.
  • Killed Off for Real: Phoebe's grandmother dies offscreen.
  • Massage of Love: Chandler and Monica take turns giving each other massages. He seems to be pretty good at it, but while Monica means well, the results are awful.
  • Miserable Massage: Monica gives very painful massages, as Chandler finds out. He's afraid of telling her since he doesn't want to hurt her, but Phoebe doesn't hesitate to tell Monica in very clear terms when she tries it on her.
Phoebe: As a masseuse, and a human, I am begging you never do that to anyone!
  • Noodle Implements: Phoebe's grandmother's funeral includes some sort of event where 3-D glasses are required. It's never found out what it is exactly.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: Rachel loans Joey some clothes so he'll look stylish for his audition to play a character who's very fashionable.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: When Chandler realizes that Monica is unknowingly giving him a Miserable Massage.
Monica: Say goodbye to sore muscles.
Chandler: [trying to mask his agony] Goodbye, muscles!
  • The Ugly Guy's Hot Daughter: Frank seems to think so.
Frank Sr.: I can't believe you're my daughter, you're so pretty!
  • Verbal Backspace: Seeing the shock on Phoebe's face after giving his name, Frank Buffay quickly backpedals and begins denying that that is his name.
Frank: [noticing Phoebe's expression] You know what, strike that. My name... actually, is-is Joe. Um... Joe... uh, Hill.
    Phoebe: You're Frank Buffay?
    Frank: Shh! No! Joe Hill!
  • Wham Line: When Phoebe asks the stranger at the funeral who he is and he replies with "Frank Buffay".
