Recap / Friends S 4 E 19 The One With All The Haste

Go To

The girls try to get their apartment back. Ross and Emily decide to get married.

Tropes:

  • Answer Cut: After the girls make the offer to kiss for one full minute in exchange for the apartment, it cuts straight to Joey and Chandler entering their apartment talking about how good it was and heading straight to their bedrooms.
  • Brick Joke: In the Cold Open, Rachel is woken up by the neighbor across the way singing, which she finds annoying. In The Stinger, the neighbor sings again, this time to a more appreciative Joey.
  • Calvinball: "Phoebe Ball", invented by Phoebe on the spot, appears to consist of Phoebe asking questions and arbitrarily awarding points for the answer closest to the description she was thinking of. The others last a single round before giving up in frustration.
  • "Could Have Avoided This!" Plot: Phoebe points out that if Rachel and Monica had just used the "Watch Us Make Out" trick after the trivia game they never would have had to switch apartments in the first place.
  • Delayed Reaction: Chandler immediately notices that the girls have switched the apartments back, but it takes Joey a minute to realize it. He even gets a beer from the fridge and sits in the Barcalounger first, like they still live in the apartment.
  • Fourth-Date Marriage: Ross proposes to Emily after knowing each other for six weeks.
  • Girl on Girl Is Hot: Monica and Rachel finally convince Joey and Chandler to let them keep the apartment by agreeing to kiss each other for one minute. We don't actually see it, but Joey says it was a good minute.
  • I'll Be in My Bunk: After watching Rachel and Monica kiss each other Chandler and Joey are seen walking into their bedrooms and slamming the doors behind them.
  • Immediate Self-Contradiction: When Chandler and Joey discover that the apartments have been switched back:
Phoebe: I had nothing to do with it.
[She closes the door on them; after a Beat, she opens the door again]
Phoebe: Okay, it was my idea. But I don't feel good about it.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: Joey becomes hesitant to switch apartments because it means moving everything again.
  • Not a Morning Person: Rachel does not appreciate her neighbor's singing early in the morning and angrily yells at him for waking her up on a Saturday.
  • Ridiculously Fast Construction: The girls manage to switch the apartments back the way they were, down to all the finer points, while Joey and Chandler are at a basketball game, which can generally last just over two hours. Even if you figure they spent an hour getting to/from the game and they attempted to handwave this by Phoebe saying that she helped, two women and a pregnant woman moving TWO apartments (with a fairly amount of heavy furniture) in under four hours strains belief.
  • Worth It: Chandler's opinion of watching Rachel and Monica kiss in exchange for the apartment: "Totally worth it!"
