Tropes

  • All Men Are Perverts:
    • Chandler claims he's primarily interested in cultivating his relationship with Kathy before having sex, and Ross immediately accuses him of lying. Rachel chastises Ross for not being mature enough to understand a complex relationship, only for Chandler to admit he is lying.
    • Chandler talks to Monica and Rachel about how the first time wasn't as good as he hoped for. Monica says the first time is always a bit awkward, to which Rachel adds guys are always thinking it went well no matter how the girl felt about it.
  • Are You Sure You Want to Do That?: Phoebe is immediately all in on being a surrogate mother, but the other friends and Phoebe Abbott urge her to think it over and consider how hard it's going to be to give up the baby in the end. Phoebe Abbott in particular warns her of the regret
  • Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: Phoebe Abbott says she's giving Phoebe a puppy for three days and then taking it back to give her an idea of hard it can be could help give up something you love. However, throughout this part of the conversation, our Phoebe keeps getting distracted playing with the adorable puppy.
  • Continuity Nod: After Chandler admits that Ross is right and that he was lying about why he and Kathy haven't had sex, Ross shoots a smug look at Rachel who responds with the double fist bump gesture.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Phoebe Abbott lampshades how she should've explained her intent with the puppy before giving it to Phoebe.
  • I'll Be in My Bunk: In the extended cut. After Monica's intense explanation of how to please a woman in bed she and Rachel immediately bolt to their bedrooms while Chandler shuts himself in their bathroom.
  • Insecure Love Interest: Chandler is apprehensive about having sex with Kathy because he's worried about how he'll compare to Joey.
  • Lousy Lovers Are Losers: Chandler is insecure about sleeping with his Kathy, because she used to date Joe (who is a Sex God) and Chandler fears the inevitable comparison since he knows he's mediocre. So he seeks Monica and Rachel's advice on how to become a better lover, leading to them showing Chandler a diagram of the seven female erogenous zones (unseen by the audience). By the end of the episode, a sated Kathy personally thanks Monica and Rachel, showing that the lesson did indeed help.
  • Precious Puppy: Phoebe Abbott gives Phoebe an adorable puppy and says she can keep it for only three days - so she can discover how she'll feel when having to give it up, reasoning it will be even harder than that to give up a baby. In the end, Phoebe acknowledges it will be hard, but she feels she can handle it - and proves it by giving the puppy as a gift to Frank and Alice. Unfortunately, it turns out the puppy was literally Phoebe Abbott's pet.
  • Rhetorical Question Blunder: Ross tries to prove his point about scientists and tour guides sitting at respective tables by asking Monica if the same holds true for the chefs and waiters at her restaurant. Monica admits she eats alone in an alley because all of her co-workers hate her.
  • Right Through the Wall: Chandler's insecurity about his performance with Kathy is rooted in how he could hear her "agreeing" with Joey through their shared bedroom wall when they were still together.
  • Take Our Word for It: Monica's drawing about the seven erogenous zones is not shown to the viewer.
  • Tongue Twister: Chandler trips up while snarking at Joey that "Donald Trump called, he wants his blue blazer back", saying "black" instead of "back". The rest of the friends rib him for his mistake. (This was a case of Throw It In!, as it was supposed to be "back", but Matthew Perry messed up. The others' reactions are improvisation.)
  • Truth-Telling Session: Ross and Joey break the divide in the lunch room by announcing truths about themselves that have nothing to do with their jobs at the museum. Their coworkers start to join in but quickly start providing Too Much Information.
  • X Called; They Want Their Y Back: Chandler's quip that "Donald Trump called, he wants his blue blazer back", except he messes up and says "black" instead of "back".
