Go To

Rachel's new job is not what she hoped it would be. She meets a man named Mark who offers her a job at Bloomingdale's. At a party, a drunken Chandler makes out with one of Joey's sisters, but the next day he can't remember which one. Rachel and Monica have a noisy upstairs neighbor; when Phoebe tries to tell him off for the noise, she starts dating him instead.

Tropes

  • Armor-Piercing Question: Monica lays into Ross for being so jealous about Rachel's friendship with Mark and asks him "don't you trust her?" which gets him to back down. Unfortunately, it doesn't last.
  • Best Friends-in-Law: When assured that Chandler isn't using Mary-Angela as a rebound girl, Joey is actually thrilled at the prospect of his best friend dating one of his sisters.
  • Big Brother Instinct: When the truth finally comes out, Joey doesn't punch Chandler, but he also doesn't stop his sister Cookie from doing it.
  • Ceiling Banger: The guy above Monica and Rachel removed his carpets so now they can hear him walking around and talking to people.
  • The Charmer: While we never hear what he says the upstairs neighbour is so charming no-one can stay mad at him.
  • Cool Old Lady: Joey mentions that his grandmother was the sixth person to spit on Mussolini's hanging corpse.
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: Ross is immediately suspicious of Mark and assumes he's trying to make a move on Rachel based on pretty flimsy reasoning. Monica quickly calls him out on it.
  • Foreshadowing: Rachel mentions her new boss is named Joanna. She will begin appearing in-person towards the end of the season.
  • The Ghost: The noisy upstairs neighbor is never seen.
  • Grandma's Recipe: Chandler compliments Joey's grandma's tiramisu. He asks about it, mostly to try to get a reply out of Mary-Angela who he hasn't identified yet. The grandma instead crabbily says that when she dies, the recipe goes with her.
  • Impairment Shot: When Joey's sisters arrive at the party, a drunk Chandler alludes to this and is certain he's just seeing multiple overlapping images of just one woman.
  • Irony: The friends always dismissed Mr. Heckles' complaints about the noise, but can't stand how loud their new neighbour is without the carpets.
  • Kissing Under the Influence: During Joey's party Chandler gets drunk and starts making out with one of Joey's sisters. When he provides a physical description of what she was wearing it turns out that he also made out with Monica. Turns out Chandler's a bit of an overly friendly kisser and also kissed Rachel, Phoebe and Ross.
  • My Sister Is Off-Limits: Joey starts out angry about Chandler and Mary-Angela, demanding to know if Chandler is just using her to get over Janice. He calms down when Chandler denies it...only to get angry again when it turns out Chandler was lying and doesn't know which of the sisters Mary-Angela actually is.
  • Noodle Incident: Cookie casually says she once shot her husband. Phoebe (prone to referencing odd stories from her own past) is unnerved by this.
  • P.O.V. Cam: Of Chandler about to get punched by Cookie for still not being able to tell which sister is Mary-Angela even after she identified herself.
  • Right Through the Wall: Rachel and Monica are unfortunate enough to hear their upstairs neighbor have sex with several partners, including Phoebe.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: All seven of Joey's sisters look enough alike that Chandler can't tell which one he kissed. The others reluctantly admit that they can't tell them apart either.
  • The Unintelligible: The noisy upstairs neighbor's speech is unintelligible, as is that of the friends who try to complain to him, although the intonations give a pretty good idea of the direction the conversations take. Justified, because they are upstairs and the scenes are from the point of view of the friends in Monica's apartment.
  • Written-In Absence: In the extended cut of the episode Chandler asks why Joey's parents aren't present at the family dinner. Joey claims they're in Vermont buying cigarettes.
