Recap / Friends S 2 E 17 The One Where Eddie Moves In

Go To

Chandler gets a new roommate but eventually Joey and he realize that they truly miss each other. Phoebe's song "Smelly Cat" gets made into a music video, but she ends up synchronized. Monica is annoyed that Ross hangs out in her and Rachel's apartment because he teases her all the time, just like they did when they were kids.

Tropes:

  • Appeal to Novelty: Joey's interior design tastes amount to this.
  • Big Brother Bully: Monica admits that she hated Ross when they were growing up because he kept picking on her and always got his way. She assures him that she loves him now, largely because they don't have to live together anymore.
Monica: You're just gonna have to stop pissing me off.
    Ross: I can do that.
  • Continuity Nod: Sorta. Earlier in the season, Smelly Cat had been heard a couple times. Most prominently, Phoebe taught this song to singer Stephanie Schiffer at the start of the season.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?:
    • Rachel yells at Monica and Ross for arguing like a mother who yells at her kids for fighting.
    • Joey upset that Chandler got a new roommate plays like someone upset that their ex started dating another, with Eddie being described as a "rebound roommate".
  • Drama Panes: At the end of the episode, Chandler stares out the window on a rainy night, missing Joey. It then cuts to Joey also staring at a window… which turns out to be a decorative glass fountain.
  • Heel Realization: Ross has one when Monica admits that their childhood wasn't "fun" for her the way it was for him.
  • Non-Singing Voice: In-Universe. Phoebe's voice got dubbed by another singer in order to commercialize "Smelly Cat". Phoebe is more concerned that some poor woman wasn't considered attractive enough to get a chance to sing on her own.
  • Nouveau Riche: Thanks to his paychecks from Days of Our Lives, Joey can buy a bunch of stuff to decorate his new apartment, much of which is incredibly tacky.
  • Roommate Drama: Chandler is disappointed that Eddie shares few of his (and Joey's) interests, enjoying neither foosball nor Baywatch.
  • Stop Copying Me: One of the very sibling-like ways in which Ross teases Monica.
