Recap / Friends S 10 E 15 The One Where Estelle Dies

Go To

Ross tries to convince Rachel's former boss at Ralph Lauren to re-hire her so she won't move to Paris. Phoebe hides from Joey that his agent Estelle has died. While looking at another house, Monica and Chandler run into Janice and are horrified by the prospect of having her as a neighbor.

Tropes:

  • Borrowed Catchphrase: To illustrate how awful it would be to have Janice as a neighbor in the suburbs, Chandler uses her Big "OMG!" to point out how much louder it will be in the suburbs as opposed to the city.
  • The Cat Came Back: Monica and Chandler once again run into Janice completely at random. Monica acknowledges this trend.
Monica: If we don't get this house, she's still going to show up wherever we go! At least if she's here, it eliminates the element of surprise.
  • Dead Person Impersonation: To prevent Joey from learning about Estelle's death, Phoebe impersonates her in phone calls with him. She does this because Joey is already upset about several of the gang moving far away and she wants to spare him from additional pain.
  • Due to the Dead: The end credit scene is Joey speaking at Estelle's funeral.
  • Indy Ploy: With Janice certain to put in an offer on the next door house, Chandler thinks to come on to her and act like he's still in love with her. She's so flustered she intends to pass on the house, saying they can't wreck their marriages over this.
  • Killed Off for Real: Estelle passed away at some point before this episode as Phoebe finds her obituary in the newspaper.
  • Mistaken for Pedophile: Ross tries to bribe Zelner into re-hiring Rachel by promising to take his son in a private museum tour, but makes it sound weird by saying he's allowed to touch anything he wants. Zelner looks considerably creeped out and Ross quickly corrects himself.
  • One Dialogue, Two Conversations: Joey and Phoebe-as-Estelle talk over the phone, with Joey now knowing that Estelle is dead after hearing Al Zeebooker’s message (and assuming he's talking to her ghost) and Phoebe assuming he still doesn't know. Joey asks what it's like "over there" (he means the afterlife) and a nonplussed Phoebe, who's on a street in New Jersey, says "it's all right".
  • Once a Season: Janice makes her final appearance on the show and almost becomes Chandler and Monica's neighbor.
  • One-Steve Limit: Zelner's son is called Ross. He also has a thing for dinosaurs.
  • Phone Call from the Dead: Joey thinks Estelle is calling him from the afterlife, though it's really just Phoebe posing as her. Their conversation manages to be both funny and poignant.
"Estelle": Look kiddo, I gotta go. Good luck with the career. You're gonna be huge.
Joey: Thanks for everything, Estelle. Bye.
  • That Came Out Wrong: After Ross makes the offer to show Zelner's son around the museum in a private tour, he realises how it might have come across;
Ross: I just heard it how you must have heard it, and that's not good. Let me start again; I'm a palaeontologist, you'll be there with us, and the touching refers only to bones... Fossils!
  • Understatement: Thinking he got a Phone Call from the Dead, Joey checks his phone and sees the call listed as coming from out of his area. Joey has this kind of reaction.
